As time passed, new human species emerged from these early groups. Homo heidelbergensis lived around 500,000 years ago. This species was likely the ancestor of Neanderthals and Denisovans. 
Modern humans are known as Homo sapiens. They emerged in Africa roughly 300,000 years ago. Scientists use fossils from Morocco and Ethiopia to date this emergence. 
Human expansion continued into the most remote parts of the world. After the Last Glacial Maximum, people moved to the Americas about 20,000 years ago.
