His leadership of the Supreme Court is often called a "constitutional revolution." This term describes a major shift in how the Court interpreted the Constitution. Warren's decisions moved American law in a liberal direction. He focused on protecting individual rights and ensuring fairness under the law.

Warren's journey began in Los Angeles, where he was born on March 19, 1891.

He gained a reputation for fighting government corruption. He won many elections by running as a nonpartisan official. In 1938, he was elected as the attorney general of California. In this role, he supported the forced removal and internment of over 100,000 Japanese Americans during World War II.

This decision remains one of the most controversial parts of his early career.

He defeated the incumbent, Culbert Olson, in the 1942 election. As governor, he led California through a period of massive growth. He is the only person to be elected to three consecutive terms as governor. In 1948, he served as the running mate for Thomas E. Dewey in the presidential election. That ticket lost to Harry S. Truman. Warren later sought the Republican nomination for president in 1952. Instead, the party chose General Dwight D. Eisenhower. After Eisenhower won, he appointed Warren as Chief Justice.

As Chief Justice, Warren led the Court through landmark legal changes.

In 1954, he helped arrange a unanimous decision in Brown v. Board of Education. This case ruled that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. The Court also worked to end Jim Crow laws in the South. In 1964, the Court upheld the Civil Rights Act in Heart of Atlanta Motel, Inc. v. United States. This law prevented segregation in public places. Warren's Court also changed how the police interact with citizens. In 1966, Miranda v. Arizona required officers to give suspects a warning about their rights.

The Warren Court also protected voting rights and personal privacy. In 1964, the case Reynolds v. Sims required legislative districts to have equal populations. This helped establish the principle of "one man, one vote." In 1965, Griswold v. Connecticut established a constitutional right to privacy. In 1967, Loving v. Virginia struck down laws that banned interracial marriage.

These rulings significantly transformed criminal procedure and civil rights. The Court also incorporated the Bill of Rights to apply to state and local governments. This meant states had to follow the same fundamental protections as the federal government.

Beyond the courtroom, Warren led important national investigations. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

Warren led the Warren Commission to investigate the event. He presented the commission's findings to President Lyndon B. Johnson.
