Some dwarf galaxies are incredibly dense. These are called ultra-compact dwarf galaxies, or UCDs. They were discovered in the 2000s. They are only about 200 light years across.

A UCD named M60-UCD1 is 54 million light years away. Its stars are packed 25 times more densely than stars in our part of the Milky Way. Some UCDs in the Virgo Cluster might even have supermassive black holes. These black holes can weigh up to 18% of the galaxy's mass.

Many dwarf galaxies live in our own Local Group. They often orbit big galaxies like the Milky Way or Andromeda. There are more than 20 known dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way. Some, like the Sculptor Dwarf Galaxy, help scientists test how the universe works. Even the huge Omega Centauri cluster might be the core of a swallowed dwarf galaxy. These small neighbors help us understand the history of the whole universe.

There are several distinct types of dwarf galaxies. Astronomers categorize them by their shape and what they are made of. Dwarf elliptical galaxies (dE) and dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph) are common types. Some are irregular, known as dwarf irregular galaxies (dIrr). There are even dwarf spiral galaxies (dS). Blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCD) are particularly interesting. They contain large clusters of young, hot, massive stars. These stars are often blue, which gives the whole galaxy a blue color.

Some dwarf galaxies are incredibly faint. Ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs) are the faintest galaxies in the universe. They contain only a few hundred to 100,000 stars.

While they look like globular clusters, they are actually more extended and contain significant dark matter. UFDs are often ancient systems. Some likely formed only a few million years after the Big Bang. Because they formed so early, they may hold secrets about the very beginning of the universe. Scientists are also searching for younger UFDs that might have formed much later.

Other dwarf galaxies are extremely dense. Ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCD) were discovered in the 2000s. They are very small, often only about 200 light years across, but they hold about 100 million stars.

Small galaxies are often at the mercy of larger ones. They can be pulled toward or even ripped apart by neighboring spiral galaxies. This can result in stellar streams or even a full galaxy merger.

Studying these small neighbors provides deep insights into the cosmos. More than 20 known dwarf galaxies orbit the Milky Way. Some, like the Sculptor Dwarf Galaxy, allow scientists to test the standard cosmological model. Even the massive Omega Centauri cluster might actually be the remaining core of a dwarf galaxy that the Milky Way absorbed long ago. By watching how dwarf galaxies move and change, astronomers learn how gravity and environment shape everything in space.
