The Dutch Golden Age was a special time in the Netherlands. It lasted from 1588 until 1672.

During these years, the Dutch Republic became a top power in Europe. They were leaders in sea travel and global trade. This period brought much wealth to their cities. It also led to a busy life of art and science. Historians sometimes call this sudden rise the "Dutch Miracle."

Many things worked together to make the Republic strong. First, the Dutch used cheap energy from peat and windmills.

They even invented a wind-powered sawmill in Uitgeest. This helped them build huge fleets of ships very quickly. Geography also helped them succeed. They were located halfway between the Baltic Sea and the Bay of Biscay. This allowed them to move goods like salt, wine, and grain easily.

This wealth grew through new ways of doing business. In 1602, they started the Dutch East India Company, or VOC.

This was one of the first large companies in the world. It used shares to raise money through the Amsterdam Stock Exchange. The VOC had a monopoly on trading with Asia. This meant they were the only ones allowed to trade there. They brought back spices like pepper, which was very expensive at the time. In 1609, they also started the Bank of Amsterdam to help with trade.

While the era was prosperous, it also had a very dark side. The Dutch Republic was involved in slavery and colonialism.

Dutch ships brought more than 550,000 enslaved people to the Americas. These voyages were miserable and many people died. The Dutch also took control of places like the Banda Islands and parts of Brazil. This wealth was built on the hard work and suffering of many people. Because of this, some people today argue about calling this a "Golden" Age.

Even with these hardships, the culture of the time was very bright. Famous artists like Rembrandt and Vermeer created lasting works.

Scientists also made big discoveries. For example, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek was a famous scientist from this era.

The Dutch even shared scientific knowledge with Japan. They were Japan's only link to the West for a long time. Eventually, wars and less money brought this era to an end in 1672.
