They were helped by the Zulu king, Shaka.

Durban has a humid subtropical climate, known as Cfa in the Köppen classification. This means the weather is characterized by hot, wet summers. The average summer temperature is around 25.5 degrees Celsius. Winters are mild and moderately dry. The average winter temperature is about 20 degrees Celsius. The area is frost-free. The city receives an annual rainfall of 1,013 millimetres. This climate has historically made the area a popular destination for domestic tourists. However, tourism numbers have seen a decline in recent years.

Human history in this region stretches back many millennia. Archaeological evidence from the Drakensberg mountains shows hunter-gatherers lived here long ago. Later, the Nguni people occupied the region. In 1497, the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama sailed past this coast. He arrived during the Christmas season. Because of this, he named the area Natal, which means "Christmas" in Portuguese. In 1686, a Dutch ship named the Stavenisse was wrecked nearby. The survivors were taken in by the Abambo people. This tribe was led by Chief Langalibalele. In 1689, the Dutch Cape Colony purchased the Bay of Natal from the Abambo people for £1,650.

Modern Durban began to take shape through British trade. In 1824, English traders Francis Farewell and Henry Fynn established a trading post. They worked with a company called J. R. Thompson & Co. Fynn helped King Shaka, the Zulu king, recover from a stab wound. In gratitude, Shaka granted the traders land around the bay.

The settlement was originally called Port Natal. In 1835, residents decided to name the town D'Urban. They named it after Sir Benjamin D'Urban, the governor of the Cape Colony. The settlement later became a borough in 1854. Durban eventually received official city status in 1935.

The city is known for its very diverse heritage. It has large Zulu, Indian, White, and Coloured populations. Starting in 1860, many indentured labourers arrived from British India. Later, passenger Indians also arrived. This history has shaped the culture and the many architectural styles in the city. You can see buildings ranging from Victorian to contemporary styles. Art Deco architecture has also left a significant mark on the city.
