He led his own jazz orchestra for many years. Some people call him America's most important composer. He was a master at writing many different kinds of music. He wrote or helped write more than one thousand songs. These pieces included short songs and long musical suites. His work is the largest recorded personal jazz legacy in history. Many of his songs are now considered musical standards.

Ellington had a very unique way of making music. He used his big band in inventive and new ways. He used sounds like trombone growls and high-squealing trumpets. His musicians also played saxophone blues licks. He even recorded songs written by the people in his band. One example is "Caravan," which was written by Juan Tizol. This song brought a Spanish tinge to big band jazz. He often worked with his writing companion, Billy Strayhorn. Together, they composed many extended musical suites.

His musical journey began in Washington, D.C. He was born on April 29, 1899. Both of his parents were piano players. His mother, Daisy, played parlor songs. His father, James, preferred operatic arias. As a young boy, Ellington took piano lessons. He also loved playing baseball in his neighborhood. Friends gave him the nickname "Duke" because of his dapper dress. He even wrote his first song, "Soda Fountain Rag," in 1914.

Ellington saw his music as something special. He used the phrase "beyond category" to describe it. This meant he felt his music was part of general American music. He did not always want to use the word "jazz." He was a very charismatic and eloquent leader. Even after he died, his impact was felt deeply. In 1999, he was given a special Pulitzer Prize award. This was a posthumous honor for his great music.
