society Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Duchy of Ferrara was a significant state located in northern Italy. It covered an area of approximately 1,100 square kilometers. This territory sat south of the lower Po River. It stretched toward the valley of the lower Reno River. The city of Ferrara served as its central hub. For much of its history, the House of Este ruled this land. They held power from 1146 until 1597.

The origins of the city are not entirely certain. It may have been settled by people from the Po River lagoons. Early history shows two main settlement centers. One was located around the cathedral. The other was the castrum bizantino in the San Pietro district. In 753 AD, a document mentioned Ferrara in the Exarchate of Ravenna. Later, the Marquis Tedald of Canossa held the land. After the death of Matilda of Canossa in 1115, Ferrara became a free municipality. This independent period lasted for about 150 years.

The House of Este began its lordship in 1208 with Azzo VI d'Este. This family also ruled the lands of Modena and Reggio. Their political status was quite complex. Ferrara was formally part of the State of the Church. This meant the Este lords were feudal lords for the Pope. However, Modena and Reggio belonged to the Holy Roman Empire. Therefore, the family served the Emperor for those territories. In 1471, Borso d'Este became the Duke of Ferrara. Pope Paul II granted him this title.

During the late 15th and early 16th centuries, Ferrara became a world-class cultural center. Ercole I d'Este was a major patron of the arts. He helped the city grow through architecture, music, and literature. In 1484, Ercole I asked Biagio Rossetti to redesign the city. This project was called the Addizione Erculea. It is a famous example of Renaissance city planning. Today, UNESCO recognizes Ferrara as a World Heritage Site because of this work.

Music flourished under the Este dukes. Composers traveled from France and Flanders to work in Ferrara. Josquin des Prez worked for Duke Ercole for a time. Jacob Obrecht also visited the city twice. He died there during a plague outbreak in 1505. Later, Alfonso I became an important patron. He favored instrumental music and the lute. The court became a major center for musical composition.

Alfonso II ruled during a peak of Ferrarese glory. He supported famous writers like Tasso and Guarini. The court was very opulent and wealthy. Its musical establishment rivaled cities like Venice and Rome. Ferrara even had a famous group of three female singers. This group was called the concerto di donne. They included singers named Laura Peverara, Anna Guarini, and Livia d'Arco. These performers were considered true virtuosos.

Natural and political changes eventually altered the Duchy. A major earthquake hit the city in 1570. In 1597, Alfonso II died without a legitimate male heir. His cousin, Cesare d'Este, attempted to inherit the lands. However, Pope Clement VIII did not recognize this succession. The Pope claimed Ferrara as a vacant fief. This brought Ferrara under direct papal rule. The House of Este kept Modena and Reggio until 1796.
