Dubliners

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

James Joyce wrote a famous book called Dubliners. It is a collection of fifteen short stories. He wrote them between 1904 and 1907. The book was first published in 1914.

The stories show life in Dublin, Ireland. They show how middle-class people lived long ago. The stories follow people as they grow up. The first three stories are about young boys. Later stories are about older people.

Joyce wanted the book to be like a mirror. He wanted to show the real life of his city. He used a theme called paralysis. This means people felt stuck in their lives. Some characters have a special moment called an epiphany. An epiphany is when a person suddenly understands something deep.

It was hard to publish this book. Joyce sent his work to fifteen different publishers. Some even refused to print his stories. One printer even burned his pages! But Joyce did not give up. He finally found a way to share his work with the world.
