A man named Johann Nikolaus von Dreyse invented a new rifle. It was made in 1836. This rifle was special because it used a bolt action. A bolt action is a way to open and close the chamber at the back. This let soldiers load the gun from the rear. Old guns had to be loaded from the front. This new way made the rifle much faster to use.

The gun used a long, thin part called a needle. This needle was a firing pin. When a soldier pulled the trigger, the needle poked through a paper case. It hit a small cap at the base of the bullet. This caused the powder to burn. A soldier could fire about six rounds every minute. This was very fast for that time. Because they could fire so quickly, soldiers could even shoot while lying on the ground. This changed how armies fought in the 1800s. Many countries, like Romania and Japan, bought these rifles to use in their own armies.

The Dreyse needle gun was a very important tool for soldiers in the 1800s. It was a breech-loading rifle, which means it could be loaded from the back. This was a big change from older guns that had to be loaded from the front. This new design allowed soldiers to fire much faster than before. It was the first rifle to use a bolt action to open and close the chamber. A bolt action is a sliding part that makes loading easy. This invention changed how armies fought around the world.

The way the rifle worked was quite unique. It used a long, thin part called a firing pin that looked like a needle. The ammunition was kept in a paper case called a sabot. When a soldier pulled the trigger, the needle poked through the paper. It struck a small percussion cap at the base of the bullet. This strike caused the black powder to burn. The powder burned from the front toward the back of the case. This helped the gun work with high pressure and used less powder.

A German gunsmith named Johann Nikolaus von Dreyse invented this rifle. He began working on different designs as early as 1824. He finally finished his successful design in 1836.

After testing it in 1840, the King of Prussia, Friedrich Wilhelm IV, ordered 60,000 rifles. Dreyse built a factory in Sömmerda to make them. The rifle officially entered military service in 1841. It was known as the M1841 Dreyse during this time.

There are many interesting facts about the rifle's history. A soldier could fire about six rounds every minute. This was much faster than many other guns used at the time. By the year 1866, the Prussian Army had 270,000 of these rifles. During the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, they had 1,150,000 in their inventory. The rifle was not perfect, though. The needle was delicate and could break. Soldiers had to carry two extra needles to replace them. They could swap a needle in under 30 seconds.

The needle gun changed how soldiers moved on the battlefield. With older guns, soldiers had to stand up to reload. With the Dreyse, a soldier could fire many shots while lying down. This gave them a big advantage in combat. Many different countries wanted these rifles. Romania bought 20,000 rifles in 1867 for their own war. Japan and China also acquired them to help their armies.

The Dreyse needle gun was a revolutionary 19th-century military rifle. It was a breech-loading weapon, meaning it was loaded from the rear rather than the muzzle. It holds a special place in history as the first breech-loading rifle to utilize a bolt action. This bolt action is a sliding mechanism used to open and close the chamber. This design significantly changed how infantry fought in many conflicts. It provided a much higher rate of fire compared to older weapons. This technological shift helped modernize the Prussian military during the Wars of German Unification.

The mechanism of the rifle relied on a unique firing system. The ammunition used a paper cartridge known as a sabot. This sabot contained a 15.4 mm acorn-shaped bullet and a 4.8 g charge of black powder. A long, thin firing pin, which resembled a needle, was powered by a coiled spring. When the soldier pulled the trigger, the needle pierced the paper case. It traveled through the powder to strike a percussion cap at the base of the bullet. This caused the black powder to ignite from the front toward the rear. This specific burn pattern ensured high pressure and minimized wasted powder. It also made the cartridge safer because the primer was difficult to ignite accidentally.

There were different versions and models of the rifle as technology improved. Early versions made by the inventor were actually muzzle-loading weapons. Later, Dreyse combined his ignition system with the bolt-action breech-loading design. In the early 1860s, the introduction of cast steel barrels allowed for industrial mass production. This led to the development of the 1862 model. The military also used enhanced M/55 ammunition to improve performance. Eventually, the Dreyse was replaced by the Mauser Model 1871 rifle.

The history of the rifle began with the German gunsmith Johann Nikolaus von Dreyse. He had been experimenting with different designs since 1824. He finally completed his successful invention in 1836. After successful testing in 1840, King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia ordered 60,000 rifles.

Dreyse established a factory in Sömmerda to meet this demand. The rifle officially entered military service in 1841 as the M1841. It saw its first combat during the German revolutions of 1848–49. It proved particularly effective during the May Uprising in Dresden in 1849.

The significance of the needle gun is seen in its massive production numbers. In 1855, only 90 Prussian battalions were equipped with the weapon due to low funding. However, production increased as more factories opened in Spandau, Danzig, and Erfurt. By the outbreak of the Austro-Prussian War in 1866, the Prussian Army possessed 270,000 needle guns. By the time of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, the inventory had grown to 1,150,000 rifles.

This massive scale of production marked the end of government-owned army workshops in favor of private industry.

Despite its success, the rifle had notable limitations and surprising facts. The firing needle was quite delicate and could break from the stress of the explosion. Soldiers were required to carry two replacement needles at all times. They could replace a broken needle in the field in under 30 seconds. The rifle also required cleaning every 60 to 80 shots because black powder leaves residue. British trials in 1849–1851 found the weapon to be too complicated and delicate. They noted that the needle might need replacing every 12 shots if it became dirty. They also observed that gas could escape from the breech during firing.

The needle gun had a profound impact on global military tactics and spread. A Prussian soldier could fire about six rounds per minute. This allowed them to fire multiple shots while lying on the ground. In contrast, an Austrian soldier using a muzzle-loader had to stand up to reload. This gave the Prussians a major tactical advantage.

The weapon's influence reached far beyond Europe. Romania purchased 20,000 rifles for their War of Independence in 1867. Japan and China also acquired the rifles to modernize their own armed forces.
