The mountains were created by powerful geological forces. Long ago, the supercontinent called Gondwana began to break apart. This breakup caused the continental crust to bulge. This bulging created steep rift valley walls. 
The geology of the Drakensberg changes as you travel along its 1,000 km length. The northern parts, in Limpopo and Mpumalanga, are capped with quartzite. These rocks are part of the Transvaal Supergroup. They are more than 2,000 million years old. In the south, the rocks are much younger. The KwaZulu-Natal and Free State border is made of Beaufort rocks. These sedimentary rocks are 250 million years old. They are less resistant to erosion than other rocks. This makes that section look more rounded and soft. 
Near the Lesotho border, the landscape looks very different. A thick layer of basalt covers this area. Basalt is a type of hard lava. This lava erupted about 180 million years ago. It rests on top of the Clarens Formation. This formation consists of sandstone laid down in ancient deserts. 
Weather and water play huge roles in this environment. The high elevations are cool and wet. It even snows during the winter months. This high rainfall creates many mountain streams. These streams feed the Tugela River and the Orange River. The Orange River is the longest river in Southern Africa. 
The Drakensberg is a vital home for many living things. The high peaks are called the alti-montane grasslands. The lower slopes are known as montane grasslands, woodlands, and forests. 
Animals also thrive in the different layers of the mountains. Large mammals like the eland and klipspringer live here. You can also find many types of frogs in the streams. One example is the Maluti river frog. Even fish are found in the mountain waters. The Maluti redfin was once thought to be extinct. However, it was later found in the Senqunyane River.
