Dragon Quest is a major series of role-playing video games (RPGs).

It was created by designer Yuji Horii, artist Akira Toriyama, and composer Koichi Sugiyama. The series is published by Square Enix. These games focus on a hero who must save a land from a powerful evil enemy. Players usually travel with a group of party members to complete their quest. The series is known for making complex gameplay feel intuitive and easy to start. This approach helped shape the entire role-playing genre.

Most games in the series follow a specific mechanical structure. Combat is turn-based, meaning players and enemies take turns to act. Players navigate these battles using a text-based menu system. This system allows players to select specific commands or items. Many main games also use random encounters, where monsters appear unexpectedly during travel.

The series also features recurring monsters, such as the Slime. The Slime is a small, blue creature that serves as the official mascot. These consistent elements help players feel familiar with every new adventure.

There are eleven main-series games in the franchise. The first four games were released for the Famicom in Japan and the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America.

Later installments moved to different systems like the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and Nintendo DS. Dragon Quest X is unique because it is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG). It is also the only numbered title that has not been released outside of Japan. The most recent main entry, Dragon Quest XI, was released worldwide in 2018. A new game, Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, has been announced.

The history of the series involves many name changes and regional differences. In North America, the games were called Dragon Warrior until 2005. This change was made to avoid a trademark conflict with a tabletop game called DragonQuest. Square Enix did not register the Dragon Quest name in the United States until 2002.

While development was often outsourced to external companies, the core creative team remained steady. Yuji Horii has been involved in every game as of 2024. Both Akira Toriyama and Koichi Sugiyama worked on most games before their deaths.

The franchise has expanded into many different types of media. There are numerous spin-off games that use Dragon Quest characters and worlds. For example, the Mystery Dungeon series grew from a successful game featuring the character Torneko. Other spin-offs include rhythm games and even augmented reality games for mobile phones. Some specialized games even use motion-sensing controllers that look like swords. This variety shows how much the world of Dragon Quest has grown since 1986.

Dragon Quest has also reached readers through books and animation. The series has inspired many manga, anime, and light novel adaptations. Starting in 1988, Enix began publishing novels based on the games. Some of these novels use a second-person perspective. This means the writing describes the reader's actions as if they are the character. These books often feature multiple endings based on the choices made in the story. This allows the medium of literature to mimic the choice-based nature of the games.

Finally, the series connects to many different fields of technology and art. The games have appeared on computers, consoles, handheld devices, and mobile phones. The music, composed by Koichi Sugiyama, often uses classical training to create a grand feeling. The character designs by Akira Toriyama provide a distinct visual identity for the monsters and heroes. By combining interactive storytelling with strong art and music, Dragon Quest has become a permanent part of gaming culture. It continues to evolve as new technology allows for different ways to experience its worlds.
