He was a famous athlete and a kind pastor. He also worked hard to make life fairer for Aboriginal Australians. He was the first Aboriginal man to be knighted in 1972. He also played for the Fitzroy Football Club in the VFL. He was known as a speedy wingman on the field. Even though he was one of the shortest players, he was very successful. He even won an award for being the best player in the reserves in 1937.

His life was not always easy. He was born in 1906 on the Cummeragunja Reserve in New South Wales. When he was only eight years old, his sister Hilda was taken from his family by the police. This was a very sad time for his family. As a teenager, he worked hard on sheep stations. He even had to defend himself in a fight with a worker. Later, he used his skills to help others. During World War II, he taught soldiers how to throw boomerangs.

Doug spent many years fighting for fairness in the law. He wanted the Australian Constitution to change. He wanted Aboriginal people to be treated as full citizens. In 1938, he spoke at a big protest called the Day of Mourning in Sydney. He told people that Aboriginal girls needed better opportunities.

He helped start a group called FCAATSI. This group collected many signatures on petitions. They wanted the government to make laws that helped Aboriginal people. Doug even met with Prime Ministers like Robert Menzies and Harold Holt to talk about these changes.

He was also a man of faith and a helper in his community. He became a pastor and worked as a social worker in Fitzroy.

He helped people who were struggling with hard problems like gambling or alcohol. He even started a church in Fitzroy in the 1940s. His hard work helped lead to a huge success in 1967. In a big vote called a referendum, 90% of Australians voted for the changes he wanted. This showed that people recognized Aboriginal people as part of the nation.
