Two groups of stars live close together.
Two groups of stars live close together.

The Double Cluster is a pair of star groups.

Long ago, a man named Hipparchus saw them. He lived in 130 BCE. Bedouin Arabs saw them too. They thought the stars looked like a fish tail. Later, William Herschel saw they were two separate groups.
The clusters are moving toward Earth. This is called a blueshift. This means they are getting closer to us. You can see them from the north. They stay above the horizon in many places. But people in places like Australia cannot see them. They are near the spot where Perseid meteors seem to come from. This happens every August. Many people think they are a beautiful sight.
The Double Cluster is a beautiful sight in the night sky.

These clusters work as a group of young, hot stars. They are the core of the Perseus OB1 association. NGC 869 has a mass of 4,700 solar masses. NGC 884 has a mass of 3,700 solar masses. Together, they are surrounded by a huge halo of stars. The total mass for the whole complex is at least 20,000 solar masses. Each cluster has more than 300 blue-white supergiant stars. These stars are very bright and hot.
People have looked at these stars for a long time. The Greek astronomer Hipparchus cataloged them in 130 BCE. Bedouin Arabs saw them as the tail of a fish. This was shown in the Book of Fixed Stars by Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi. Later, Johann Bayer named them h Persei and chi Persei in 1603. In the early 19th century, William Herschel found the truth. He was the first to see they were two separate clusters.
There are many specific facts about these stars. Both clusters are about 14 million years old. This makes them much younger than the Pleiades stars. The Pleiades are between 75 million and 150 million years old. NGC 884 has five special red supergiant stars. These are RS Persei, AD Persei, FZ Persei, V403 Persei, and V439 Persei. These stars are all variable, which means they change. The clusters are also blueshifted. This means they are moving toward Earth.
You can find them if you live in the northern part of the world. They stay above the horizon in many northern places. However, people in New Zealand or South Africa cannot see them. They are near the spot where the Perseid meteor shower begins. This meteor shower peaks around August 12 or 13. In Greek myths, the stars look like a jeweled sword handle. This sword belongs to the hero Perseus.
The Double Cluster is a spectacular pair of star groups located in the constellation Perseus.
These two clusters function as the core of the Perseus OB1 association. This association is a large group of young, hot stars. NGC 869 has a mass of 4,700 solar masses. NGC 884 has a mass of 3,700 solar masses. Both clusters are wrapped in a very extensive halo of stars. Because of this halo, the total mass of the complex is at least 20,000 solar masses.
Each cluster contains many massive and bright stars. There are more than 300 blue-white supergiant stars in each group. These stars are incredibly luminous and hot. The hottest main sequence stars in the clusters are of spectral type B0. NGC 884 also contains five specific red supergiant stars. These stars are all variable, meaning their brightness changes over time. They are RS Persei, AD Persei, FZ Persei, V403 Persei, and V439 Persei. All five of these stars are around the 8th magnitude.
Both clusters are relatively young in cosmic terms. They are both approximately 14 million years old. This makes them much younger than other famous groups like the Pleiades. The Pleiades have an estimated age between 75 million and 150 million years.
Humans have observed these stars for thousands of years. The Greek astronomer Hipparchus cataloged them as early as 130 BCE. Bedouin Arabs had their own view of the stars. They saw the cluster as the tail of a small fish. This detail was included in Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi's Book of Fixed Stars. In 1603, Johann Bayer included them in his work, Uranometria. He gave them the designations h Persei and χ Persei.
It took much longer to understand what the clusters actually were. The true nature of the Double Cluster was not known until the telescope was invented. In the early 19th century, William Herschel made a major discovery. He was the first person to recognize that the object was two separate clusters. While it is not in the Messier catalog, it is in the Caldwell catalogue. This catalog lists many popular deep-sky objects for observers.
The Double Cluster is easy to find from many parts of the world. It is circumpolar from most northern temperate latitudes. This means it stays above the horizon continuously. However, it is invisible from places south of 30º south latitude. This includes locations like New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa.
