Dorudon was a medium-sized whale. One kind, called Dorudon atrox, is well known. Its nose was in the middle of its head. This is different from whales today. These whales also lacked a melon. A melon is a part of the head that helps whales use sound to find things. Because they lacked this, they could not use echolocation as well as modern whales. They used their teeth to eat small fish and mollusks. Mollusks are animals with shells, like clams. Their teeth had many different shapes to help them eat.

These whales lived a long time ago during the Eocene age. They lived in warm seas all around the world. Some fossils were found in Egypt and Pakistan. Other fossils were found in the United States and New Zealand. They also lived near Western Sahara.

These whales had a very interesting way they worked. They were medium-sized animals. One kind is called Dorudon atrox. Their nostrils were not at the tip of the nose. Instead, they were halfway between the snout and the top of the head. They also lacked a melon. A melon is a part of the head that helps whales use sound. Because they did not have this, they could not use echolocation as well as whales today. They used their many teeth to eat small fish and mollusks.

Learning about the Dorudon took a long time.

A man named Gibbes first found some teeth and bones. He thought they were just baby whales from a different group. Later, a professor named Louis Agassiz looked at them. He said they belonged to a separate group. Other scientists like Andrews and Kellogg also studied these fossils. For a while, the names for these whales were very confusing. Now, scientists have a much better way to group them.

There are two main kinds of Dorudon. One is named Dorudon serratus. The other is named Dorudon atrox.

D. atrox is the best-known because its skeleton is very complete. These whales were larger than other relatives like Saghacetus or Zygorhiza. Their teeth had many different shapes. Some teeth were simple and pointy. Other teeth had many small bumps called denticles. These different shapes helped them eat their food.

We can compare these ancient whales to things we see today. They look a lot like the whales in the ocean now. However, they were quite different in how they lived. For example, they lived alongside a huge whale called Basilosaurus. Some baby Dorudon had bite marks on their skulls. These marks might have come from a hungry Basilosaurus. It shows us how the food chain worked in the warm seas long ago.

The Dorudon was a genus of extinct ancient whales. These animals belong to a group called basilosaurids. They lived during the Eocene epoch, roughly between 41.03 and 33.9 million years ago.

While they might look like modern whales, they were part of an earlier stage of whale evolution. Understanding the Dorudon helps scientists learn how whales changed from land animals into sea creatures. They lived in warm seas across the globe, from the Tethys Sea to the shores of New Zealand.

To understand how a Dorudon lived, we must look at its physical features. These whales were medium-sized animals. The species Dorudon atrox was larger than many of its relatives.

Their nostrils were located midway between the snout and the top of the head. This is different from many modern whales. They also lacked a melon. A melon is a fatty organ in the head used for echolocation. Because they lacked this organ, they could not use sound to navigate as effectively as whales do today. Instead, they likely relied on other senses to hunt small fish and mollusks.

The teeth of the Dorudon were very specialized for eating. Their dental formula for D. atrox was 4/3, 1/1, 2/2, 3/3. This means they had different types of teeth in their upper and lower jaws. The upper incisors were simple and conical. The premolars, however, were much more complex. For example, the P2 tooth was the largest upper tooth. It had small bumps called accessory denticles. These teeth were often double-rooted and compressed from side to side. In the lower jaw, the molars had a deep groove called a reentrant groove. This specific tooth structure helped them process their prey efficiently.

The history of discovering the Dorudon was quite confusing for scientists. In 1845, a man named Gibbes found teeth and bones in South Carolina. He originally thought they were just juvenile teeth from a genus called Zeuglodon. He even withdrew his new genus name because of this mistake. However, a professor named Louis Agassiz disagreed. Agassiz argued that the specimens belonged to a completely separate genus. Later, other scientists like Andrews and Kellogg studied more fossils. They initially thought some specimens were a different genus called Prozeuglodon. Eventually, researchers realized these were actually members of the Dorudon genus.

Today, scientists recognize two main species within this genus. These are Dorudon serratus and Dorudon atrox. It is difficult to compare them perfectly because the fossils for D. serratus are very limited. However, D. atrox is the best-known species. This is because its skeleton was found in a very complete state. D. atrox is notably larger than other relatives like Saghacetus or Zygorhiza. Its skull shape is also unique compared to all other archaeocetes. These differences in size and bone structure help scientists categorize them correctly.

The environment of the Eocene was a place of intense competition. The Dorudon lived alongside much larger whales, such as the Basilosaurus. This relationship can be seen in the fossil record. Some juvenile Dorudon fossils show unhealed bite marks on their skulls. These marks suggest that hungry Basilosaurus may have preyed upon the smaller whales. This provides a clear look at how the food chain functioned in ancient warm seas. It shows that even as whales were evolving, they were part of a complex and sometimes dangerous ecosystem.

Studying the Dorudon connects us to the broader story of biological evolution. By looking at their brain size, scientists found something interesting. The encephalization, or brain-to-body ratio, of D. atrox was not much higher than land mammals called mesonychians. This tells us that while they were fully adapted to the water, their brain development was still in an early stage compared to modern whales. The Dorudon represents a vital link in the history of life on Earth. They show us the transition from ancient ancestors to the massive whales we see in our oceans today.
