Dorudon was a medium-sized whale. One kind, called Dorudon atrox, is well known. Its nose was in the middle of its head. This is different from whales today. These whales also lacked a melon. A melon is a part of the head that helps whales use sound to find things. Because they lacked this, they could not use echolocation as well as modern whales. They used their teeth to eat small fish and mollusks. Mollusks are animals with shells, like clams. Their teeth had many different shapes to help them eat.

These whales had a very interesting way they worked. They were medium-sized animals. One kind is called Dorudon atrox. Their nostrils were not at the tip of the nose. Instead, they were halfway between the snout and the top of the head. They also lacked a melon. A melon is a part of the head that helps whales use sound. Because they did not have this, they could not use echolocation as well as whales today. They used their many teeth to eat small fish and mollusks.
Learning about the Dorudon took a long time. 
There are two main kinds of Dorudon. One is named Dorudon serratus. The other is named Dorudon atrox. 
We can compare these ancient whales to things we see today. They look a lot like the whales in the ocean now. However, they were quite different in how they lived. For example, they lived alongside a huge whale called Basilosaurus. Some baby Dorudon had bite marks on their skulls. These marks might have come from a hungry Basilosaurus. It shows us how the food chain worked in the warm seas long ago.
The Dorudon was a genus of extinct ancient whales. These animals belong to a group called basilosaurids. They lived during the Eocene epoch, roughly between 41.03 and 33.9 million years ago. 
To understand how a Dorudon lived, we must look at its physical features. These whales were medium-sized animals. The species Dorudon atrox was larger than many of its relatives. 
The teeth of the Dorudon were very specialized for eating. Their dental formula for D. atrox was 4/3, 1/1, 2/2, 3/3. This means they had different types of teeth in their upper and lower jaws. The upper incisors were simple and conical. The premolars, however, were much more complex. For example, the P2 tooth was the largest upper tooth. It had small bumps called accessory denticles. These teeth were often double-rooted and compressed from side to side. In the lower jaw, the molars had a deep groove called a reentrant groove. This specific tooth structure helped them process their prey efficiently.



Studying the Dorudon connects us to the broader story of biological evolution. By looking at their brain size, scientists found something interesting. The encephalization, or brain-to-body ratio, of D. atrox was not much higher than land mammals called mesonychians. This tells us that while they were fully adapted to the water, their brain development was still in an early stage compared to modern whales. The Dorudon represents a vital link in the history of life on Earth. They show us the transition from ancient ancestors to the massive whales we see in our oceans today.
