She worked in Hollywood for many years. Her career lasted from the silent era through the early 1940s. She was a very successful leader in the film world. From 1927 until 1943, she was the only woman directing in Hollywood. This was a time when very few women held such roles. She made twenty films during her time as a director. Arzner helped many famous actresses start their big careers. These stars included Katharine Hepburn, Rosalind Russell, and Lucille Ball.

Arzner learned how the movie business worked from the ground up. She first worked in the script department typing scripts. This helped her learn what every story was about. Soon, she became an editor at Realart Studio. She edited 52 films during that time. In 1922, she worked on the film Blood and Sand. She even helped shoot some bull-fighting scenes for it. This hard work helped her become a director. She eventually directed her first film, Fashions for Women, in 1927. This movie was a commercial success.

Dorothy's life began in San Francisco, California, in 1897. She grew up in Los Angeles with her parents. Her father, Louis Arzner, owned the Hoffman Café. This was a famous restaurant next to a theatre. Many silent film stars and directors ate there. Famous people like Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks visited the café. Before movies, Dorothy studied medicine at the University of Southern California. She wanted to be a doctor. She also worked in an ambulance unit during World War I. Later, she decided to join the film industry instead.

Arzner was a pioneer who changed how movies were made. She was the first woman to join the Directors Guild of America. She was also the first woman to direct a sound film. During the filming of The Wild Party in 1929, she invented a tool. She attached a microphone to a fishing rod. This was the very first boom mic. This invention allowed the actress Clara Bow to move more easily. It helped the crew capture sound without getting in the way. This was a huge step for movies with sound.

Her films often told special stories about women. Many of her movies looked at how women relate to one another. In Christopher Strong, she showed two women connecting during a hard time. In Craig's Wife, she explored the lives of women in marriage. Her most famous work is often called Dance, Girl, Dance. This film stars Lucille Ball as a showgirl. The story looks at how women express themselves through dance. Arzner retired from Hollywood in 1943 after making First Comes Courage. She left behind a long legacy of important films.
