It was made by Garry Trudeau. The first strip appeared on October 26, 1970. It started as a way to tell stories about college life. The name comes from a slang word and a roommate's name.

The strip follows many different people. The main character is Mike Doonesbury. In the beginning, Mike was a college student. As the years passed, the characters grew up. They got real jobs and even got married. This makes the characters feel very real to readers.

Doonesbury also talks about politics. It uses funny ways to show real leaders. Some leaders are just voices you cannot see. Others are funny objects. For example, Bill Clinton was shown as a talking waffle.
