The Legation Quarter features European revival styles from the fin-de-siècle period. Modernity is also present through tall office buildings and new hotels. Dongcheng holds immense cultural and economic significance. It contains more than 25% of Beijing's Major National Historical and Cultural Sites. A similar proportion of the city's municipal-level heritage sites are located here. The Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Economically, the district is driven by the service sector. Over 75% of the district's economic activity comes from this sector. This includes tourism, retail, and hospitality. Popular destinations include the shopping in Wangfujing and the nightlife in Nanluoguxiang. 
The district has undergone several administrative changes over time. In 1911, the establishment of the Republic of China made it a formal district. Following the 1949 Communist victory, the area was reorganized. In 1952, two districts named Dongsi and Dongdan were created. These were merged and renamed Dongcheng in 1958. The current form of the district was finalized in 2010. This occurred when Dongcheng merged with the former Chongwen District to its south. These changes reflect the evolving political and social structure of Beijing.
