Long before Europeans arrived, the Taíno people lived on Hispaniola. They were Arawakan-speaking people from South America. By 600 CE, they had established themselves on the island. They divided the land into five distinct chiefdoms.

The Taíno practiced farming, fishing, and hunting. They were also skilled at making ceramic goods. They used names like Ayiti or Quisqueya for the island. Quisqueya means "mother of the lands" in the Ciguayo language. This name is still used in songs today.

European history began when Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492. He claimed the island for Castile and named it La Española. His brother, Bartholomew Columbus, built the city of Santo Domingo in 1496. This city became the first permanent European settlement in the Americas. The Colonial Zone contains the first cathedral, palace, and fortress built in the New World.

However, the Taíno population declined quickly due to diseases like smallpox. To replace them, African slaves were imported to work on plantations. This changed the makeup of the population forever.

The path to independence was long and difficult. Spain ceded the western part of the island to France in 1697. This western area became the independent nation of Haiti in 1804. In 1821, a group of Dominicans declared independence from Spain. This period was called the Ephemeral independence because it lasted only two months. Haiti then occupied the territory for twenty-two years. In 1844, the secret society La Trinitaria helped win independence.

Since 1996, the Dominican Republic has moved toward a representative democracy. This means citizens participate in choosing their leaders through elections.

Today, the Dominican Republic has a very strong economy. It has the largest economy in the Caribbean. Between 1992 and 2018, it had an average real GDP growth rate of 5.3%. In 2014 and 2015, growth reached 7.3% and 7.0%. These were the highest growth rates in the Western Hemisphere. This success comes from construction, manufacturing, tourism, and mining.
