In 1848, naturalists Hugh Edwin Strickland and Alexander Gordon Melville published a monograph titled "The Dodo and Its Kindred." 
Strickland and Melville reached their conclusions by studying physical remains. They examined a preserved head and foot at the Oxford University Museum. They noted that the dodo had a short keratinous beak part and a long, slender, naked basal part. They also observed that the nostrils were located low on the middle of the beak and surrounded by skin. These specific traits, along with similar leg scales and skeletal features, are only found in pigeons. 
Modern technology has provided even more clarity through genetic science. In 2002, American geneticist Beth Shapiro and her colleagues analyzed dodo DNA for the first time. They used mitochondrial cytochrome b and 12S rRNA sequences from an Oxford specimen. This analysis confirmed that the dodo was part of the Columbidae family. The study identified the Southeast Asian Nicobar pigeon as the dodo's closest living relative. 
The history of the dodo is closely tied to human arrival on Mauritius. Dutch sailors first recorded the bird in 1598.
