Later, in 1848, Hugh Edwin Strickland and Alexander Gordon Melville studied its bones. They proved that the dodo was closely related to pigeons.

Today, we know the dodo's place in the tree of life. Its closest living relative is the Nicobar pigeon. DNA studies in 2002 helped confirm this connection. The dodo and its relative, the Rodrigues solitaire, belong to a group called Raphinae. This group includes pigeons that live on islands. This allowed the bird to adapt to life on the ground. The dodo likely lived in the woods within the drier coastal areas of the island. To process its diet, which likely consisted of fruits, the dodo used gizzard stones. These stones stayed in its digestive system to help grind up tough food.

Others show a grey, naked head with a beak colored black, yellow, and green. While some illustrations were drawn from live specimens, many were not. This uncertainty means our visual understanding of the dodo is still somewhat unresolved.

Early scientists struggled to classify the dodo correctly. Some researchers initially labeled it as a small ostrich, a rail, an albatross, or even a vulture. In 1842, Danish zoologist Johannes Theodor Reinhardt proposed that dodos were actually ground pigeons. Although this idea was first met with ridicule, it was later proven correct. In 1848, naturalists Hugh Edwin Strickland and Alexander Gordon Melville published a monograph titled "The Dodo and Its Kindred."

They used anatomical evidence to separate the myth of the dodo from the biological reality.

Strickland and Melville reached their conclusions by studying physical remains. They examined a preserved head and foot at the Oxford University Museum. They noted that the dodo had a short keratinous beak part and a long, slender, naked basal part. They also observed that the nostrils were located low on the middle of the beak and surrounded by skin. These specific traits, along with similar leg scales and skeletal features, are only found in pigeons.

Modern technology has provided even more clarity through genetic science. In 2002, American geneticist Beth Shapiro and her colleagues analyzed dodo DNA for the first time. They used mitochondrial cytochrome b and 12S rRNA sequences from an Oxford specimen. This analysis confirmed that the dodo was part of the Columbidae family. The study identified the Southeast Asian Nicobar pigeon as the dodo's closest living relative.
