This division helps a local government manage an area. Districts can be many different sizes. Some cover huge regions or counties. Others might be small parts of a city. Some districts are made just for schools. Other districts are used for voting or for courts.

Because they help organize things, they are used all over the world.

How a district works depends on the country. In some places, they help run the local government. In India, districts are called revenue districts. They help the government collect taxes and plan new programs.

They also help bring services to the people living there. In Bangladesh, there are 64 districts. These are divided into smaller parts called Upazilas. There are 493 of these smaller units in total. In Brunei, the four districts are managed by a District Office.

Many different kinds of districts have existed throughout history. The word "district" comes from a French word. It also comes from a Latin word meaning to exercise justice. The first time we see the word used in English was in 1611.

In Canada, the government created districts in the Northwest Territories between 1870 and 1905. The first one was the District of Keewatin in 1876. Later, these districts became their own provinces or territories.

Different countries use specific numbers for their districts. Afghanistan has almost 400 districts. In Austria, there are 95 district administrative offices. However, the country also has 115 judicial districts for its courts. Azerbaijan is divided into 59 districts and 11 cities. In Germany, there are 402 districts. Most of these are rural districts. Some large cities in Germany are called urban districts instead. In Hungary, 175 districts were set up on January 1, 2013.

Districts help us understand how people organize their lives. They connect large countries to the small towns where people live. For example, in Austria, the city of Vienna is split into municipal districts. These districts help the city government do its work. In China, districts are a newer way to organize cities. Whether they are for schools, land, or laws, districts help keep things running smoothly. They make sure every person belongs to a specific, managed area.
