Distance

Distance is a measurement of how far apart objects, points, or ideas are.

It can be a numerical value or a qualitative description of separation. In physics, distance often refers to a physical length between two locations. However, the term is also used metaphorically to describe differences between similar things. This might include the difference between two strings of text or the separation between people in a social network. To make these various ideas precise, mathematicians use a formal concept called a metric space.

In classical physics, the most common way to measure distance is through Euclidean distance. This is the length of a straight line connecting two points. In a flat, two-dimensional plane, this shortest path is calculated using the Pythagorean theorem. For three-dimensional space, the formula expands to include a third coordinate.

Scientists use different tools depending on the scale of the measurement. A simple ruler works for small objects, while radar is used for much longer distances. To measure the vast reaches of space, astronomers use a method called the cosmic distance ladder.

Measuring distance on a curved surface requires a different approach. Because we cannot tunnel through the Earth's mantle, we cannot use a straight line to travel between two cities. Instead, we measure the shortest path along the surface. This path is known as a geodesic. On a sphere like Earth, this is often approximated as the great-circle distance.

Pilots often follow these curved paths when flying long routes across the globe. The arc length of these geodesics allows creatures living on a surface to navigate effectively.

Sometimes, the "straight line" is not the most practical way to measure a path. In a city with a grid of streets, travelers must follow the blocks. This is known as Manhattan distance.

It measures the total number of east-west and north-south blocks one must traverse. Another specialized version is the Chebyshev distance, also called chessboard distance. This measures the minimum number of moves a king must make to travel between two squares on a chessboard. These models help scientists simulate real-world movement more accurately.

In more abstract fields, distance describes how much two things differ. In computer science, researchers use edit distance to compare strings of text. For example, the words "dog" and "dot" have a small edit distance because they only differ by one letter. This concept is vital for the way spell checkers function. In graph theory, distance measures the shortest path between two points in a network. This explains the "six degrees of separation" concept in social networks. It also applies to the Erdős number, which measures connections to mathematician Paul Erdős.

Statistics also uses distance to compare probability distributions. These measurements are often called divergences. One important example is the Kullback–Leibler divergence, which is used in information theory. Other types include the Mahalanobis distance and the energy distance. These tools allow mathematicians to treat groups of probabilities as geometric objects called statistical manifolds.

By using these mathematical distances, researchers can find patterns in complex data sets.

Finally, distance is used in the social sciences to describe human experiences. In sociology, social distance describes the separation between groups based on race, gender, or social class. In psychology, psychological distance refers to how an object feels removed from a person. This removal can be based on time, space, or even how hypothetical a situation feels. Whether measuring the stars or human relationships, distance helps us understand the gaps that define our world.
