Long ago, the Czechs and Slovaks lived in one country. This country was called Czechoslovakia. It began in 1918 after a big war. For many years, the two groups shared a government. But they had different ideas about how to rule. Some people wanted more power for the Slovaks.

By 1992, leaders from both sides had many talks. They decided to split the country into two. One part became the Czech Republic. The other part became Slovakia. This change happened on December 31, 1992. It was a very calm split. People called it the "Velvet Divorce." This is because there was no fighting. Other countries were splitting apart with wars, but not here.

The new countries needed their own things. They each chose new symbols. The Czechs used a lion. The Slovaks used a double cross. They also needed new money. To save time, they used old bills. They put new stamps on the old money. This helped people switch to new coins and notes. Even though they split, they still live side by side today.
