Disodium helide

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Scientists found a new way to join two elements. One is helium. The other is sodium. They made this in 2016. It is called disodium helide. This substance needs high pressure to stay together. High pressure means a lot of squeezing.

To make it, they used a diamond anvil cell. This tool squeezes things very hard. They put tiny plates of sodium and helium inside. Then they used a laser to heat them. This made the parts join.

Disodium helide is a special kind of matter. It is an electride. This means it has loose electrons. These electrons sit in small spaces. The substance is clear. It is also an insulator. An insulator does not let electricity flow easily.

This material has a cubic crystal structure. This means its tiny parts look like cubes. It looks like a mineral called fluorite. It stays in this shape even when you stop squeezing. It melts at a very high heat. This heat is much higher than the melting point of sodium. It is a very rare find.
