The history of DirectX began with a challenge in the mid-1990s. Microsoft employees Alex St. John and Craig Eisler noticed that developers were not bringing games to Windows 95. Programmers feared that the Windows environment lacked the direct hardware access found in MS-DOS. There were also issues with compatibility, such as crashes seen with Disney's Animated Storybook: The Lion King. To solve this, Eisler and Eric Engstrom built a new set of APIs and a driver model. As technology advances, DirectX continues to evolve to meet new demands. In 2002, DirectX 9 introduced support for much longer shader programs. This allowed for more complex visual effects through pixel and vertex shaders. More recently, the suite has added tools for artificial intelligence and high-speed file loading. For instance, DirectStorage is a GPU-oriented tool for file input and output. The introduction of DXR in 2018 brought real-time raytracing to the platform.
