Diplomatic immunity is a set of rules for world leaders.

These rules protect officials from the laws of another country. This helps them do their jobs safely. This is true even when countries are fighting.

Many cultures used these rules long ago. In ancient India, messengers were safe from death. The prophet Muhammad also said not to harm envoys. Later, the Mongol leader Genghis Khan was very strict about this. If a state hurt his messengers, he would attack them.

In the past, these rules were not always clear. Sometimes, leaders broke them. This led to wars or big fights. In 1709, the British Parliament made a law to help. They wanted to protect a Russian official from abuse.

Today, most countries follow the Vienna Convention. This is a big agreement from 1961. It says diplomats have special rights. If a diplomat breaks a law, their home country can waive immunity. This means the person can go to court. If not, the host country can simply send them home. This keeps the world talking and working together.
