Dimension

Imagine you are trying to find a specific spot in the world.

To find a spot on a simple line, you only need one number. This is a one-dimensional space, or 1D. If you are looking at a flat surface, like a map, you need two numbers.

Coord-XY
Coord-XY

These might be coordinates like latitude and longitude. This is a two-dimensional space, or 2D. For the world around us, we often use three dimensions.

Coord XYZ
Coord XYZ

You need three numbers to find a point inside a cube or a sphere. This 3D space lets you move up and down, left and right, and forward and backward.

Math tells us that dimension is about how many pieces of information we need.

Coord NumberLine
Coord NumberLine

We call these pieces coordinates. The dimension is the smallest number of coordinates needed to name any point. In math, dimension is also related to freedom. It is the number of ways a point can move on an object. A point itself has zero dimensions because it cannot move. A line is 1D because a point can only move in one direction. A surface is 2D because it has more room to move.

People have studied these ideas for a long time. The idea of higher dimensions goes back to René Descartes. However, the real study of higher-dimensional geometry grew in the 1800s.

Important mathematicians like Arthur Cayley and William Rowan Hamilton did great work. Ludwig Schläfli and Bernhard Riemann also helped build these big ideas. Riemann wrote a famous paper in 1854 about these spaces. Other thinkers like John T. Graves found new ways to look at math in 1843. These discoveries changed how we see the math of shapes.

There are many different types of dimensions in science.

Calabi-Yau
Calabi-Yau

In physics, scientists use spacetime to describe our world. This includes four dimensions. Some theories use even more. Superstring theory uses ten dimensions to describe how things work. M-theory uses eleven dimensions. There are even spaces in quantum mechanics that have infinite dimensions. This means they have a number of dimensions that never ends. Math also uses complex dimensions to study different kinds of shapes.

Dimension is not just for things you can touch.

Riemann Sphere
Riemann Sphere

It can be used for abstract spaces in math. These spaces can be very complicated. Some shapes, called fractals, have dimensions that are not whole numbers. They might have a dimension of 2.5, for example. This is called a Hausdorff dimension. We can also use math to study how shapes change. This helps us understand everything from tiny particles to the whole universe.
