Dieffenbachia is a group of tropical plants. They belong to a family called Araceae. These plants grow in the New World Tropics. They live from Mexico and the West Indies down to Argentina. Many people grow them as houseplants. They have straight stems and pretty leaves. The leaves often have white spots or flecks. People like them because they can grow in the shade.

These plants have a special way of working. Their cells contain tiny, needle-shaped crystals. These crystals are called raphides. If a person or pet chews a leaf, these needles cause trouble. They can cause a burning feeling or redness. This can lead to swelling or numbing in the mouth. Some people might drool a lot too. This is why they are called dumb cane. It can make it hard to speak for a short time.

A man named Heinrich Wilhelm Schott named this plant. He was the director of the Botanical Gardens in Vienna. He named it to honor his head gardener. His gardener was named Joseph Dieffenbach. Joseph lived from the years 1790 to 1863. There are about 60 different species in this group. Some types, like 'Camille' and 'Tropic Snow', are very popular. They even won awards from the Royal Horticultural Society.

In the wild, these plants are part of a big cycle. In Costa Rica, a tiny frog lives near them. The strawberry poison frog uses the leaf axils for its tadpoles. About 89% of the tadpoles are placed there. Because of this, the frog numbers change with the plants. However, the plants faced a hard job in the forest. A small pig-like animal called a collared peccary eats them. Researchers found that many plants disappeared because of these animals. By 2012, only 28% of the plants from 2002 remained.

You can grow these plants in your own home. They like warm temperatures and filtered sunlight. They need soil that is moist but also has air in it. If the leaves turn yellow, the soil might need more food. Some leaves will roll up and fall off. This happens to make room for new leaves. It is like a plant changing its clothes. They are much easier to care for than people think.
