An English soldier named Thomas Williamson used the name "dhole" in 1808. He heard it as a local name in India. Later, Peter Simon Pallas gave them the scientific name *Cuon alpinus* in 1811.

He described them living in parts of Russia and China. Another scientist, Brian Houghton Hodgson, once thought they were the ancestors of all domestic dogs. He even proposed a different name for them in 1833. Many researchers have since worked to figure out their true history.

Fossils found in places like Italy, Germany, and Japan show where they once traveled. In the Czech Republic, very old fossils were found in the Jáchymka cave. These bones were 35,000 to 45,000 years old. These ancient dholes had much more genetic diversity than dogs today. Their teeth were shaped like sharp slicing tools to help them eat.

Dholes have unique bodies that set them apart from other dogs.

Their skulls have a curved shape instead of a sunken one. They also lack a third lower molar tooth. Their upper teeth have only one sharp point instead of many. These physical traits helped scientists group them with other animals like the African wild dog. Even though they look different, DNA shows they are closely related to the *Canis* genus. This is similar to how you might see different breeds of dogs today. They are a unique part of our world's history.

Dholes are physically distinct from members of the genus *Canis*, which includes wolves and domestic dogs. Their skull profile is convex, meaning it curves outward, rather than being concave or sunken. Their dental structure is also very different. They lack a third lower molar tooth entirely. Additionally, their upper molars possess only a single cusp, or sharp point.

This is a reduction from the two to four cusps found in many other canids. These specialized teeth have developed into sharply trenchant, or slicing, points to aid in feeding.

Social structure is a defining feature of dhole life. They live in highly social clans rather than following a rigid dominance hierarchy.

While a typical clan consists of about 12 individuals, some large groups have been known to exceed 40 members. Dholes are diurnal, which means they are active and hunt during daylight hours. They preferentially target medium and large-sized ungulates, which are hoofed mammals.

In tropical forests, they must compete with large predators like the tiger (*Panthera tigris*) and the leopard (*Panthera pardus*). Although they share some prey, they often target different species to minimize this competition.

The history of the dhole involves a massive geographical range. During the Pleistocene epoch, dholes ranged throughout much of Asia.

Their range even extended into Europe, and one controversial record suggests they may have reached North America. However, their range became much more restricted about 12,000 to 18,000 years ago. Today, they are extinct in Central Asia and parts of Southeast Asia. They may also be extinct on the Korean peninsula and in parts of Russia.

Scientific study of the dhole has evolved significantly over the centuries. In 1811, Peter Simon Pallas proposed the binomial name *Canis alpinus*. He described a range that reached much further north into Russia than where they live today. In 1833, Brian Houghton Hodgson suggested the name *Canis primaevus*. He believed the dhole was a primitive form and a progenitor, or ancestor, of the domestic dog. Later, Hodgson recognized their physical differences and proposed the genus *Cuon*. In 1955, paleontologist Erich Thenius concluded they descended from a golden jackal-like ancestor.

Recent genetic research has provided new insights into dhole evolution. In 2018, whole genome sequencing revealed evidence of ancient genetic admixture between the dhole and the African wild dog (*Lycaon pictus*). This suggests the two species may have interbred in the past, possibly in the Middle East. While they are closely related to the *Canis* genus, they also share an ancient ancestry with the *Lycaon* lineage. This relationship is even seen in the extinct Sardinian dhole (*Cynotherium sardous*), which is most closely related to the living dhole among all canines.

There are several recognized subspecies of dholes, though genetic studies show no clear distinctions between them.

One major grouping includes populations from South and Central India into Myanmar. Another group extends from northern India through Thailand and the Malaysian Peninsula. The origins of dholes in Sumatra and Java remain unclear.

Some researchers speculate these island populations may have been introduced by humans. The survival of the species depends on addressing threats like habitat loss, loss of prey, and disease transfer from domestic dogs.
