History shows that many different empires have controlled this region. Ancient Hindu scriptures, including the Rig Veda and Mahabharata, mention the area. The region was once under Mughal influence before the Sikh Empire captured it in 1785. Following the First Anglo-Sikh War in 1846, the East India Company took control. This made the area part of the British Indian province of the Punjab. A major natural disaster occurred in 1905 when a massive earthquake hit the Kangra Valley. This event killed nearly 20,000 people across the region. In Dharamshala specifically, 1,625 people lost their lives.

A transformative event occurred for the town in 1960. The 14th Dalai Lama fled Tibet and established a government-in-exile. The Indian Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, allowed the Central Tibetan Administration to settle in McLeod Ganj. This led to the establishment of the Namgyal Monastery and various Tibetan institutions. Thousands of Tibetan exiles have since settled in the area. The literacy rate in the town is 87%, which is higher than the Indian national average of 74.04%.
