Dermatophytosis

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Dermatophytosis is a common skin infection caused by tiny living things called fungi. Many people call this condition ringworm, but that name is actually a mistake. There are no worms involved in this sickness at all. Instead, about 40 different types of fungus can cause it. These fungi love to live on skin, hair, and nails.

This infection is very common all over the world. It is estimated that up to 20% of people might have it at the same time. The names we use for it often describe where it is on the body. For example, tinea capitis affects the scalp, while tinea pedis affects the feet.

This infection works by spreading through contact with certain environments or living things. Fungi thrive in places that are warm and moist. This includes spots like locker rooms, swimming pools, or even skin folds. You might catch it by using exercise machines that were not cleaned. It can also spread if you share personal items like towels or hairbrushes. Some people get it from contact with animals like dogs and cats. This makes it a zoonotic disease, which means it can move between animals and humans.

Once the fungus is there, symptoms usually start within four to fourteen days.

People have known about ringworm for a very long time. Descriptions of the condition go all the way back to ancient history. Before 1906, doctors used different things to try to treat it. They sometimes used compounds made of mercury, sulfur, or iodine. Some people even used a special powder called araroba. For hairy areas like the scalp, doctors used X-rays to help treat the infection. Scientists have even found evidence of this disease in very old fossils. This suggests the disease might have existed since the Mesozoic era.

Doctors use several ways to find out if someone has this infection. They often start by looking at the red, itchy, or scaly patches. Sometimes these patches look like raised red rings on the skin. To be sure, they might use a microscope to look at a skin scraping. This helps them see the tiny fungal parts directly. Veterinarians use even more special tests for pets. They might use a UV light to see if hair glows an apple-green color. This light helps them find the fungus on a pet's hair shafts.

Knowing how to prevent ringworm is a great way to stay healthy. You can keep your skin dry to make it harder for fungi to grow. It is also smart to wear shoes in public showers or locker rooms. You should avoid walking barefoot at the beach to stay safe. Never share your clothes, towels, or sports equipment with other people. If you have pets, be careful not to touch animals with bald spots. Keeping your hands clean after touching animals is another good step.
