The name describes the mountain pass that sits in the high Caucasus Mountains. Some old legends even say that Alexander the Great built a barrier here. The city is one of the oldest places in the world where people still live. Some records show people lived there as far back as the 8th century BC. This makes it the oldest city in all of Russia.

Because it was such a good place to control travel, many different groups wanted to rule it. Over many centuries, the city changed hands many times. Different kingdoms like the Persians, Arabs, and Mongols all held power there. In the 5th or 6th century AD, the Sassanid Persians re-established the city. They used it as a strong military outpost to protect their borders. The Persian kings even moved about 3,000 families from the interior of Persia to live in the city.

Because of this position, Derbent has always been a vital site for controlling land traffic. It is considered the oldest city in Russia. Historical records date its existence back to the 8th century BC. This makes it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the entire world.

The name Derbent comes from the Persian word "Darband." This term translates to "gate in the barrier."

The name refers to the easternmost pass in the high Caucasus Mountains. Some legends even link the site to the Gates of Alexander. This is a mythical barrier supposedly built by Alexander the Great. The city was re-established in the late 5th or early 6th century AD. The Sassanid dynasty of Persia played a major role in this period. Specifically, the ruler Kavadh I re-established the city during this time. Before this, the area was part of Caucasian Albania. This was a satrapy, or a province, of the Achaemenid Persian Empire. The city was also known by many other names in different languages. Arabic texts called it "Bāb al-Abwāb," which means "Gate of Gates." Turkic peoples used the name "Demirkapi," meaning "Iron Gate."

Derbent's strategic importance led to many different rulers throughout history. The city changed ownership many times due to its location. Various groups like the Persians, Arabs, Mongols, and Timurids all controlled it. In the 5th century, the Sassanid Empire used Derbent as a border fortress. They even appointed a "marzban," which is a military governor, to rule there. The Sassanid kings built massive defensive structures to protect the coast. One ruler, Yazdegerd II, attempted to seal the road with a mud-brick wall. Later, the ruler Khosrau I directed the construction of the famous fortress.

This fortress is known as Naryn-Kala. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The walls originally featured thirty towers that faced toward the north. To strengthen the city, Khosrau I moved about 3,000 families from the interior of Persia to live in Derbent. This helped create a large Persian-speaking population in the region.

The Arab conquest in 643 AD changed the city significantly. Arab Muslims captured Derbent after they invaded Persia. They turned the city into a major administrative center. They also introduced Islam to the region. During this era, the city grew very large. Arab historians claimed the population exceeded 50,000 people. This made Derbent the largest city in the Caucasus during the 9th century. The city was also a key stop on the northern branch of the Silk Route. This made it a center for both trade and the arts. The Caliph Harun al-Rashid even lived in Derbent. His presence brought great fame to the city's commerce and culture.

Following the Arab era, the Shirvanshahs dynasty held power for a long time. They ruled from 861 until 1538. This was longer than any other Islamic dynasty. The Shirvanshahs were known for their culture and politics. They often fought to control Derbent. In 1437, the ruler Ibrahim I successfully conquered the city. This led to the creation of the Derbenid dynasty. This was a branch of the Shirvan family that ruled specifically from Derbent. Eventually, the Safavid dynasty under Shah Ismail conquered the region. This brought Derbent back under Iranian rule for several centuries. The city remained under Iranian control until the 19th century.

The Russian Empire eventually took control of the city. This happened in the early 19th century. The change was formalized through the Treaty of Gulistan signed with Qajar Iran. Russia had briefly occupied the area before during the expedition of Peter the Great. Today, Derbent is a modern city with about 120,000 residents.

Despite its long history, many old landmarks remain. For example, the Holy Saviour Armenian Church still stands in the skyline. It no longer serves as a church but is now a museum for carpets and crafts. This reflects the changing populations of the city over time. In 1913, a census showed about 3,000 Armenians lived in the area.

Derbent serves as a fascinating example of how geography shapes human history. Its position on a narrow land bridge forced empires to compete for it. The city acts as a link between the mountains and the sea. It also links the northern steppes to the southern plateaus. The massive walls and the Naryn-Kala fortress show how much effort was spent on defense.

Even today, the city remains an important part of the Caucasus. It is a place where many different cultures and eras meet. The layers of Persian, Arab, and Russian history are visible in its streets and buildings. Understanding Derbent helps us understand the movement of people and ideas across Eurasia.
