The title translates to "The Knight of the Rose" in English. It is a three-act work featuring an original German libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. The opera is highly valued for its ability to balance lighthearted comedy with profound, weighty themes. It explores complex human experiences such as infidelity, the process of aging, and the nature of selfless love. Through its music and story, it captures a sense of nostalgia and emotional depth.

The plot follows a series of intricate social maneuvers and romantic complications.

In the 1740s, the aristocratic Marschallin lives with her young lover, Count Octavian Rofrano. Her boisterous cousin, Baron Ochs, seeks to marry Sophie von Faninal, a wealthy merchant's daughter. To fulfill a tradition, Octavian is asked to act as a Rosenkavalier, or Knight of the Rose. This role requires him to present a ceremonial silver rose to the bride-to-be. However, Octavian and Sophie fall in love during the ceremony. They eventually devise a comic intrigue to escape the engagement, supported by the Marschallin's selflessness.

Musically, the opera is defined by its unique orchestration and vocal requirements. Strauss utilized a lyrical style that moved away from his previous, darker works. He blended Romantic orchestration with musical elements inspired by classical Viennese traditions. A key feature is the frequent use of the Viennese waltz rhythm. While the story is set in the 1740s, the waltz did not become famous until the 19th century. Strauss used this anachronism intentionally to evoke a nostalgic atmosphere of imperial Vienna.

The work is also notable for its focus on the female voice. The three primary protagonists are written for specific female voice types. These include the light lyric soprano role of Sophie, the mezzo-soprano role of Octavian, and the mature dramatic soprano role of the Marschallin. This arrangement allows for beautiful vocal textures, such as duets and a powerful trio during the emotional climax. Because of these roles, some singers have performed two or even all three of these parts during their careers.

The creation of the opera was a collaborative effort between Strauss and Hofmannsthal. The two men first met in Berlin in 1899. After working on the dramatic opera Elektra, they agreed to collaborate on a more comedic project. In February 1909, Hofmannsthal and Harry Graf Kessler drafted a scenario for the plot. This scenario was inspired by a 1907 operetta titled L'Ingénu libertin. Strauss began composing the music in earnest shortly after. He finished the music for the final act on September 26, 1910.

The production of the opera involved careful attention to visual design. Strauss and Hofmannsthal commissioned Alfred Roller to design the sets and costumes. They wanted a specific look, so they required all future productions to use his designs. This was achieved through an illustrated prompt book. The creators also recruited Max Reinhardt to assist with rehearsals. Although he acted as a "shadow director" to ensure his ideas were carried out, Reinhardt received no official credit in the original program.
