Most mammals are heterodont. They have four main types of teeth. Incisors are at the front. They are flat for cutting food. Canines are behind them. They are often sharp for tearing. Premolars and molars are at the back. These are used for grinding food. 
In many mammals, teeth grow in two sets. The first set is called deciduous teeth. These are often called baby teeth. Later, they are replaced by permanent teeth. Animals with two sets are called diphyodont. Scientists use a dental formula to show tooth counts. This formula uses letters like I for incisors and C for canines. Vertebrate dentition has diversified significantly since its origin approximately 450 million years ago. While fish and reptiles often maintain long rows of undifferentiated, homodont teeth, mammals developed a much more complex system.

The formula follows the order of I:C:P:M, representing incisors, canines, premolars, and molars. For example, a formula of 2.1.2.3 indicates two incisors, one canine, two premolars, and three molars on one side of the upper jaw. Because there are two sides to the mouth, the total tooth count is twice the formula number. In humans, the permanent formula is expressed as 2.1.2.3 / 2.1.2.3. We use lowercase letters, such as "d", to denote deciduous or milk teeth. The greatest number of teeth recorded in any known placental land mammal was 48.
Different species show incredible variety in their dental adaptations. The aye-aye, a prosimian, has a unique formula of dI:dC:dM, which is 1:1:3. Some mammals, like cows, have lost certain teeth entirely; cows lack upper incisors and canines, using a dental pad instead. The cat is a carnivore with specialized teeth called carnassials, used for slicing meat. In humans, the third molar is commonly called the wisdom tooth. While there is some disagreement in nomenclature between zoology and dentistry regarding premolars, these specialized structures remain vital. These dental variations demonstrate how natural selection shapes the mouth to meet the specific dietary needs of a species.
