It serves as a major urban center within the Lesser Sunda Islands. The city is the second largest in Eastern Indonesia, following Makassar. Denpasar acts as a vital gateway to the island of Bali. It also functions as a central hub for other cities in the region. The city's economy is heavily driven by the growth of the tourism industry. This industry has turned Denpasar into a significant center for business activities. Consequently, the city maintains a high per capita income and a high growth rate within Bali.

Denpasar experiences a tropical savanna climate, known scientifically as Köppen Aw. This climate is influenced by the Australian monsoon system. Because it is located just south of the equator, it stays quite warm. Daytime temperatures usually range between 20 °C and 33 °C throughout the year. The weather patterns change with the monsoon seasons. From December to March, the West monsoon brings heavy rain and high humidity. During this time, rain often falls at night and clears quickly during the day. From June to September, the humidity levels are lower. During these months, the evenings can feel quite mild.

The history of the city is tied to its name and its former rulers. The name Denpasar comes from the Balinese words "dén," meaning north, and "pasar," meaning market. This suggests the city began as a market town. It likely started at the site of the current Kumbasari Market.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the area was known as Badung. It functioned as the capital of the Hindu Majapahit Kingdom of Badung. The city's history includes a difficult period during the Dutch intervention in 1906. During this time, the royal palace was looted and destroyed. A statue in the Taman Puputan central square commemorates a mass suicide by the Balinese. This event occurred as a refusal to surrender to invading Dutch troops.

This airfield was seized by Japanese forces in 1942 during World War II. In 1958, Denpasar became the seat of government for the Bali province. For many years, it was the administrative center for both the city and the Badung Regency. To better manage the growing urban population, Denpasar was granted administrative independence. On 15 January 1992, it was officially established as an autonomous city.

The population of Denpasar has seen significant fluctuations. In the 2010 Census, the population was 788,445. However, the number fell to 725,314 in the 2020 Census. This decline was caused by an outflow during the COVID-19 pandemic and travel closures. By the end of 2024, the official population estimate was 670,210. The city is part of a larger metropolitan area called Sarbagita. This area includes Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar, and Tabanan. In 2024, the Sarbagita metropolitan area had 2,187,198 residents.

The city is divided into four districts: South, East, West, and North Denpasar.
