Most denim is blue. This blue comes from indigo dye. In many cloths, the blue threads are on the outside. The white threads stay on the inside. This is why the inside of jeans looks white.

Denim has a long history. It was first made in Nîmes, France. In 1873, Jacob W. Davis made the first denim pants with metal rivets. These rivets help the pants stay strong.

In heavy metal music, fans use denim in a special way. They make a "battle jacket." This is a denim vest with many patches. The patches show which bands the fan loves. These jackets help fans feel like they belong to a group.

Denim is a very sturdy fabric made from cotton.

It uses a special way of weaving called a twill weave. This weave creates diagonal lines on the surface of the cloth. These lines make the fabric much tougher than other cotton fabrics. Most denim is blue because of indigo dye.

In this fabric, the vertical threads are dyed blue. The horizontal threads stay white. This is why the inside of your jeans looks white. People use denim for many things like jackets, hats, and even furniture.

Making denim is a long and careful process. First, cotton fibers are cleaned and combed into long lengths. Then, machines spin these fibers into yarn.

Next, the vertical yarn is dipped into dye. This happens many times to make the color strong. In the past, people used plants like Indigofera tinctoria for this. Today, most denim uses synthetic indigo dye. Some denim also has a little bit of Spandex added. This makes it called stretch denim. It can stretch up to 15 percent.

Denim has a very interesting history. The name comes from a French phrase meaning "serge from Nîmes."

This fabric was first made in Nîmes, France. In the United States, denim became very popular in the mid-19th century. A tailor named Jacob W. Davis changed things in 1873. He made the first denim pants with metal rivets. These rivets help the pants stay strong. Davis worked with Levi Strauss & Co. to make more pants. His small shop could not keep up with the demand.

Denim has been used for many different jobs. In the 20th century, it was used for strong uniforms. The French national railways used denim for their staff. The Royal Air Force even used denim coveralls for dirty work.

In the 1970s, denim became part of youth culture. Some car companies even used denim-like designs inside cars. For example, the 1973 AMC Gremlin had a denim trim package. Volkswagen also made a "Jeans Beetle" from 1973 to 1975. This shows how much people loved the look of the fabric.

Today, denim is part of many different groups. Some artists, like Ian Berry, use old denim to make art.

Heavy metal fans use it in a special way too. They create something called a "battle jacket." This is usually a denim vest with many patches. The patches show the logos of favorite bands. These jackets help fans feel like they belong together. The denim market is huge and worth billions of dollars. Most denim is now produced in places like China, India, and Turkey.

Denim is a sturdy, cotton warp-faced textile. It is famous for its distinct diagonal ribbing. This pattern comes from a specific method called a twill weave. In this weave, the weft thread passes under two or more warp threads. This structure makes the fabric much tougher than cotton duck.

Most people recognize denim by its color. Usually, the warp threads are dyed while the weft threads remain white. This creates a blue exterior and a white interior. This is why the inside of denim jeans looks much lighter than the outside.

The creation of denim begins with raw cotton fibers. These fibers are cleaned and combed into long, cohesive lengths. Industrial machines then spin these lengths into yarn. Traditional denim yarn is made entirely of cotton. However, some modern versions include an elastane component like Spandex or Lycra. Adding up to 3% elastane creates "stretch denim." This type of fabric can have an elasticity of up to 15%.

After spinning, the yarn must be dyed. Historically, people used indigo extracted from plants. The genus *Indigofera* provided "true indigo" or natural indigo. In Europe, people used a plant called woad, or *Isatis tinctoria*. Eventually, *Indigofera tinctoria* replaced woad because it was a superior dye. Today, most denim uses synthetic indigo dye. The dyeing process involves a repeated sequence of dipping and oxidation. More dips result in a stronger color. Before 1915, workers used skein dyeing to dip individual bundles of yarn. Later, rope dyeing machines and sheet dyeing machines were developed.

Weaving follows the dyeing stage. Most modern denim is made on shuttleless looms. These machines produce very wide bolts of fabric. However, some producers still use traditional shuttle looms. Shuttle-loom denim is often identified by its selvedge. The selvedge is a finished edge created when the weft yarn reverses direction.

High-quality denim is often associated with selvedge because it requires more careful assembly. The weight of denim varies, but a typical yard of fabric has a specific weight used in manufacturing.

Denim has a deep history tied to specific people and places. The name is a contraction of the French phrase "serge from Nîmes." This fabric was first produced in Nîmes, France. In the United States, denim became common by the mid-19th century. A major shift occurred in 1873. A Nevada tailor named Jacob W. Davis created the first rivet-reinforced denim pants. His shop could not meet the high demand. He partnered with Levi Strauss & Co. to increase production.

Throughout the 20th century, denim served many roles. The French national railways used it for uniforms. The Royal Air Force issued olive-drab denim coveralls for dirty work.

By the 1970s, denim became a major part of youth culture. This influence even reached the car industry. American Motors Corporation offered denim-like interiors. Their 1973 model year featured a Levi's-branded trim package. Other companies followed this trend. Volkswagen produced the "Jeans Beetle" from 1973 to 1975. Jeep also offered denim-style packages from 1975 through 1977. These designs used indigo-colored nylon or vinyl because real denim cannot pass fire resistance safety standards.

Today, denim is used for everything from clothing and shoes to furniture and art. Artists like Ian Berry even use recycled denim to craft portraits. It also holds deep meaning in the heavy metal subculture. Fans create "battle jackets" or "kuttes." These are denim vests decorated with many hand-sewn patches. The patches show band logos and album art. These garments act as a "multimodal biography" of a fan's musical life.

The denim industry is also a massive global market. In 2020, the market was worth US$57.3 billion. More than 50% of denim is produced in Asia. Key producing countries include China, India, Turkey, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The market value is expected to reach $76.1 billion by 2026.
