It is currently the largest professional services network in the world. This status is measured by both its total revenue and its number of employees. The network is recognized as one of the "Big Four" accounting firms. This group also includes EY, KPMG, and PwC. Deloitte provides many specialized services to businesses and governments. These include audit, consulting, financial advisory, risk, tax, and legal services.

The network operates through a specific organizational structure. It is composed of various member firms. These firms belong to Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited. This is a private company limited by guarantee. It is incorporated in England and Wales. This structure allows the network to maintain a presence in over 150 countries. By working through these member firms, Deloitte can provide local expertise on a global scale.

The history of the firm began in the mid-19th century. William Welch Deloitte founded the company in London, England, in 1845.

He was a pioneer in his field. He became the first person appointed as an independent auditor for a public company. That company was the Great Western Railway. The firm eventually expanded to the United States in 1890. It opened a branch office on Wall Street in New York. This was the firm's first venture outside of its home country.

Deloitte grew significantly through a series of strategic mergers. In 1972, the firm merged with Haskins & Sells to form Deloitte Haskins & Sells. Later, in 1989, it merged with Touche Ross in the United States. This created the entity known as Deloitte & Touche. In 1993, the international firm was renamed Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. It was later shortened to just Deloitte. Another major expansion occurred in 2002. During this time, the firm merged with several practices from Arthur Andersen. These practices were located in the UK, Europe, and North and South America.

The scale of the modern network is immense. Deloitte employs approximately 470,000 people globally. In the 2024 fiscal year, the network earned aggregate revenues of US$67.2 billion.

The firm has also been involved in major global events. For example, it served as a sponsor for the 2012 Summer Olympics. However, the firm has also faced significant challenges. In 2017, it suffered a major cyberattack. This event resulted in a breach of client confidentiality. It also made a large amount of employee information public.

Deloitte has constantly expanded its capabilities by acquiring new businesses. In 2013, it purchased the Monitor Group, which is a large strategy consulting business. It has also moved into digital and mobile fields. In 2012, it acquired the mobile advertising agency Übermind. This marked the firm's first entry into mobile applications. It also acquired the advertising agency Heat in 2016. This helped grow Deloitte Digital, which had 7,000 employees by 2016. This division billed $2.1 billion in 2015.

Today, the firm is deeply connected to emerging technologies. It has explored the use of blockchain through its Rubix consultancy. In 2016, it created its first blockchain lab in Dublin. It also launched a second hub in New York in 2017. The firm has also engaged with digital currencies. In 2016, Deloitte Canada set up a Bitcoin automatic teller machine. It even equipped a restaurant in its office complex to accept Bitcoin. These steps show how the firm connects traditional accounting with new digital systems.
