The shock helps the heart stop a bad rhythm. After the shock, the heart's own natural pacemaker can start a normal beat again. This part of the heart is called the sinoatrial node.

There are different kinds of these machines. Some are small and portable. We call these AEDs. They are automated external defibrillators. They are easy for anyone to use. The machine uses a voice to give instructions. It even checks the heart rhythm for you.

Other machines are used in hospitals. Doctors use manual models. They must choose the right power and timing. Some people even have a tiny device inside them. This is an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. It stays in the body to watch the heart. It can give a shock if the heart beats badly.
