They believed the dark and cold water was too hard for life. However, we now know that many different kinds of creatures live there. These communities are very hard to study. It costs a lot of money to visit them. The deep sea is also a very remote place.
Life in the deep sea works in special ways because there is no sunlight. In the top layers, plants use sunlight to make food. This is called photosynthesis. In the deep, dark aphotic zone, plants cannot grow. Instead, animals rely on other sources of energy. Some eat marine snow, which is bits of organic matter drifting down. Others eat whale falls, which are the bodies of whales on the seafloor. Some use chemosynthesis, a way to make food from chemicals. This happens near hydrothermal vents or cold seeps. 
Scientists have learned about these places through many great adventures. In the 1870s, Sir Charles Wyville Thomson led the Challenger expedition. His team found many different types of deep-sea creatures. Later, in 1977, scientists J. Corliss and J. van Andel saw clam beds. They used a small underwater vehicle called the DSV Alvin. They found these clams near hydrothermal vents in the eastern Pacific Ocean. This was an unexpected and amazing discovery. 
One of the most famous places is the Challenger Deep. It is located in the Mariana Trench near the Mariana Islands. 
The environment in the deep sea is very extreme. The pressure is very high and can crush things. To survive, many fish are small or have jelly-like bodies. They also lack air pockets like swim bladders.

Chemosynthesis occurs at specific sites like hydrothermal vents and cold seeps. At hydrothermal vents, specialized bacteria can turn chemicals into food. This supports complex life, including dense beds of clams and giant tube worms. 

Physical conditions in the deep sea are defined by extreme pressure and temperature. Pressure increases by about one atmosphere for every ten meters of depth. In the deep sea, pressure typically ranges from 20 to 1,000 atm. To survive this hyperbaricity, many deep-sea fish are small, often under 25 cm. They often have gelatinous flesh and minimal skeletal structures. They also eliminate internal cavities like swim bladders that would collapse under pressure. 
History shows how our understanding of the deep sea has grown through exploration. Before the 1870s, scientists thought life in the deep ocean was sparse. During the Challenger expedition, Sir Charles Wyville Thomson and his colleagues discovered many different types of creatures. 
The Challenger Deep represents the most extreme depths of the ocean. Located in the Mariana Trench, it is the deepest surveyed point on Earth. In 1875, researchers from the HMS Challenger recorded its depth at 4,475 fathoms. In 1960, Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard descended to the bottom in the Trieste bathyscaphe. They observed a small, flounder-like fish moving in the spotlight. Later, the Japanese ROV Kaiko reached the bottom in 1995. In 2009, the Nereus vehicle reached a depth of 10,902 meters. 
Other unique deep-sea features include brine pools, which are often called seafloor lakes.
