These different stories show how many people have passed through this land.
Debrecen has a very long and busy history. It was first written about in the year 1235. After the Mongol invasion, the area grew much faster. In 1361, King Louis I gave the citizens rights to choose their own leaders. This helped the town govern itself.
By the 1500s, it had become a very important place for markets.
Many big changes happened to the city over the years. It once served as the capital of Hungary during a revolution in 1848. It was also the capital again at the end of World War II.
The city was badly damaged during that second war. About 70% of the buildings were damaged and half were destroyed. People worked hard to rebuild it into a modern city.
Today, Debrecen is a lively place with many different people. Most of the 211,320 residents speak Hungarian.

The origins of the name Debrecen are not fully certain. There are at least three different theories regarding its etymology. One theory suggests a Turkic origin. In this view, the name comes from a word meaning "live" or "move." Another theory points to a Slavic origin. This theory suggests the name means "well-esteemed" or comes from "good land." A third idea, proposed by Professor Šimon Ondruš, links the name to a Proto-Slavic term for a gorge.
The city was first documented in 1235 under the name Debrezun.
Debrecen grew significantly after the Mongol invasion of Europe. Small nearby villages were deserted, which allowed the settlement to expand. In 1361, Louis I of Hungary granted citizens the right to choose their own judge and council. This established a system of self-government. By the 16th century, it was a major market town. During the Ottoman period, the city lacked walls or a castle. Its leaders had to use diplomacy to survive. The city was sometimes protected by the Ottoman Empire or by Prince Francis II Rákóczi.
The city became a major center for the Protestant Reformation. It embraced Calvinism very early in its history. This led to the city earning nicknames like "the Calvinist Rome" and "the Geneva of Hungary." The Reformed Great Church, or Nagytemplom, became a central landmark.
In 1538, the Reformed Theological University of Debrecen was founded. This institution is a predecessor to the modern University of Debrecen. The university remains a central part of the city's identity today.
Industrial and technological growth changed the city's appearance in the 19th century. The railway line connecting Budapest and Debrecen was completed in 1857. This turned the city into a vital railway junction.
In 1884, Debrecen became the first Hungarian city to operate a steam tramway. The city transitioned from a provincial town to a modern urban center. New banks, factories, and hospitals were built. Large parks and villas also began to appear in the landscape.
World War II brought great destruction to the city. During the Battle of Debrecen in October 1944, hundreds of tanks fought near the area. By the end of the war, 70% of the buildings were damaged. Half of the buildings were completely destroyed. Following the war, the city underwent a difficult reconstruction. The new Communist government changed the city's structure significantly. They took private property into public ownership. They also annexed half of the city's area to nearby towns. This included the loss of control over the Hortobágy pasture.
Modern Debrecen is a diverse and populated city. According to the 2011 census, the population was 211,320 people. Most residents, about 99.3%, spoke Hungarian. The city also has many people who speak English or German.
