He was a Founding Father and a captain in the American Revolutionary War. He also signed the U.S. Constitution and owned much of the local land. The village was incorporated in 1805 and became a chartered city in 1841.

Economic growth in the 19th century was driven by transportation and manufacturing. In 1827, construction began on the Dayton–Cincinnati canal. This canal allowed for the efficient transport of goods to Cincinnati. This connection helped the city thrive throughout the 1800s. Later, the National Cash Register Company, or NCR, became a major employer. John Henry Patterson formed the company in 1884. In 1906, engineer Charles F. Kettering helped develop the first electric cash register. This invention helped establish Dayton as a major center for manufacturing.

This peace accord helped end the conflict in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The negotiations took place from November 1 to November 21, 1995. The agreement formally ended the conflict in December of that year. Local citizens supported the process with peace vigils and candles. The city was even called the "temporary center of international peace" by local airport signs. This event highlighted the city's connection to global political systems.

Today, the city is diversifying its economy to ensure future stability. It is moving from heavy manufacturing toward service-based sectors. Healthcare and education are now major parts of the local economy.
