The Dassault Rafale is a highly advanced, twin-engine fighter aircraft from France.

Its name translates to "gust of wind" or "burst of fire." Dassault Aviation describes the aircraft as "omnirole." This term means it can perform many different missions with a single platform. It is capable of air supremacy and aerial reconnaissance. It can also conduct ground support, in-depth strikes, and anti-ship strikes. Additionally, it is used for nuclear deterrence.

This versatility makes it a vital tool for modern military operations.

The aircraft utilizes a specific aerodynamic design known as a canard delta wing. This configuration uses small forewings, called canards, located near the front of the plane. These work with the large triangular delta wings to provide high maneuverability. The Rafale is also powered by two engines. It features a sophisticated RBE2 AA active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar. This radar allows the pilot to detect targets with high precision. The plane also uses an optronique secteur frontal infra-red search and track (IRST) sensor.

This sensor helps find targets using heat signatures.

There are three primary variants of the Rafale designed for different needs. The Rafale C is a single-seat version meant for land-based operations. The Rafale B is a twin-seat version also intended for land use. This version allows for a second crew member in the cockpit. The Rafale M is a single-seat version designed for carrier-based operations.

This version is built to land on the decks of ships. Each variant is tailored to specific roles within the French Air Force or Navy.

The history of the Rafale began in the mid-1970s. At that time, the French Air Force and Navy wanted new fighters. They initially tried to collaborate with the UK, Germany, Italy, and Spain. This group aimed to build a "Future European Fighter Aircraft." However, the partners disagreed on workshare and technical requirements. France wanted to maintain technological independence for its industry. Consequently, France withdrew from the multilateral talks in July 1985. This decision led to the development of the Eurofighter Typhoon by the other nations.

To prove the design worked, Dassault built a technology demonstrator called the ACX. This aircraft first flew on July 4, 1986. It was piloted by Guy Mitaux-Maurouard during its maiden flight. During that first hour, the plane reached Mach 1.3. The demonstrator underwent an intensive eight-year flight-test programme. In 1990, the aircraft tested the M88 turbofan engine. It achieved supercruise, which means flying at supersonic speeds without using engine reheat.

This successful testing gave the French government confidence to proceed.

The Rafale project faced significant challenges and delays. It was originally scheduled to enter service in 1996. However, post-Cold War budget cuts changed many military priorities. This caused the timeline to shift significantly. Despite these hurdles, the Rafale was officially introduced in 2001. It is built almost entirely within France. Major domestic contractors like Thales and Safran provide critical components. This ensures that France maintains control over its own advanced defense technology.

The Rafale has become a successful international aircraft. Many nations have selected it for their own air forces.

These include Egypt, India, Qatar, Greece, Croatia, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, and Serbia. The aircraft has seen active combat in several regions. These include missions over Afghanistan, Libya, Mali, Iraq, and Syria. It has also been used by India near its border with Pakistan. Its ability to perform diverse roles in various environments has made it a respected warplane globally.
