Daqing is a large city in the Heilongjiang province of China.

The history of this land began long ago. It was once a place for hunting with many prairies and wetlands. The Dörbet Oirat tribes lived in this unsettled area. Later, the Russian Empire built a railway through the region in 1898.

Building the oil field was a very hard job. The workers had to deal with harsh weather and few supplies. They used a single-story mud building method called scientific gandalei. Later, they began using multi-story brick buildings in the late 1960s. The city grew in clusters around oil wells and refineries. In the 1980s, the area officially became a city. The leaders wanted to turn it into a new industrial city.
Life in Daqing is tied closely to its industry. The city has many different districts like Sartu, Longfeng, and Ranghulu.

Today, Daqing is a very busy place for travel. It is a major hub for many different railways.

Daqing is a major prefecture-level city located in western Heilongjiang province, China.
The discovery of oil in 1959 transformed the entire region. Before this, the area was an unsettled hunting ground. It consisted mostly of wetlands and prairies used by the Dörbet Oirat tribes. The Russian Empire helped connect the area to the wider world in 1898. They built the Chinese Eastern Railway through the territory. This railway included a station at Sartu, which is now a district in the city.
Developing the oil field was a massive technical and social undertaking. Workers faced extremely harsh weather and very limited supplies. To house the growing workforce, they used a single-story mud technique called scientific gandalei. By the late 1960s, the city began introducing multistory brick buildings. The city did not grow all at once like a typical town. Instead, it expanded incrementally in clusters. These clusters formed around new refineries and active oil wells.
During the 1960s, Daqing became a famous industrial model for the country. The government promoted a slogan called "Learn from Daqing in Industry." This encouraged other people to follow the city's example of hard work. The city was seen as a model of a communist industrial society. It aimed to integrate urban and rural life into one system. In this model, men worked in the oil fields for state salaries. Women and older children focused on agricultural production to feed the community.
The city's administration has changed many times over the decades. In 1960, a town called Anda was established to manage the oilfield. By 1964, it became the Anda special administrative region. During the Cultural Revolution, the industry faced major disruptions and oil shortages. In 1967, the People's Liberation Army was called in to maintain order. This made Daqing one of the first places under military control during that era. Eventually, the city's master plans shifted from decentralization to centralization. This led to the development of major urban centers in Sartu, Dongfeng, and Longfeng.
Daqing is a massive economic engine for China. The Daqing Oil Field is the largest in the country. It is also the fourth most productive oil field in the entire world. Petroleum production is huge, accounting for 60.8% of the city's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In 2011, the city's GDP reached RMB 374 billion yuan. The city also exports over 10 million tons of crude oil every year.
The environment in Daqing is defined by a humid continental climate. This means the weather is influenced by the Siberian high and the East Asian monsoon. Winters are often bitterly cold and include occasional snow. Most of the yearly rainfall happens during the summer months. In July and August, the city sees the majority of its precipitation.
Today, Daqing is a highly connected hub for transport and culture. It is a major railway junction where several important lines meet.
