The city is a member of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities. This status highlights its role in education and community development.

The climate in Damietta is classified as a hot desert climate. This is known as the BWh classification in the Köppen-Geiger system. However, the weather is often moderated by winds from the Mediterranean Sea. These winds prevent the temperatures from becoming too extreme. Summers are moderately hot with relatively high humidity levels. Winters are mild and can be moderately wet. During the winter, it is not uncommon to see sleet or hail.

Damietta has a long and complex history involving many different empires. The 6th-century geographer Stephanus of Byzantium mentioned the city. During the Hellenistic period, it was known as Tamiathis. The city was an important naval base for the Abbasid, Tulunid, and Fatimid periods. The Abbasid Caliphate used it as an entry port to India and Tang China. However, this importance made it a target for attacks. In May 853, the Byzantine Empire sacked and destroyed the city.

The Crusades brought intense conflict to the port during the 12th and 13th centuries. Control of Damietta was vital because it meant control of the Nile. Crusaders believed that holding the Nile would allow them to conquer Egypt. In 1218–19, a siege devastated the local population. The Crusaders occupied the port in November 1219 and looted the city. Later, in 1249, King Louis IX of France captured the city's fort. He was eventually taken prisoner in April 1250. He had to surrender Damietta as a ransom.

Following these conflicts, the Mamluk sultan Baybars took action in 1251. He destroyed the city to prevent further Crusader use. In the early 1260s, he rebuilt it with stronger fortifications. He moved the city a few kilometers from the Nile. This change made the mouth of the Damietta branch impassable for ships. The city also has a deep ecclesiastical history. It was once a Christian bishopric. Today, it remains a titular see for the Catholic Church. This means it is a symbolic seat for bishops.
