John Neely Bryan surveyed the area in 1833. He planted a stake near the Trinity River in 1839. He returned in 1841 to start a permanent settlement named Dallas. The exact origin of the name is still debated. One theory says it honors Vice President George M. Dallas. Another theory suggests it comes from a village in Scotland.

Dallas developed into a powerful economic center. The economy includes many diverse sectors. These include defense and information technology. Telecommunications and transportation are also dominant. Financial services are a major part of the economy. This includes traditional banking and investment banking. It also includes private equity and venture capital.

North American Aviation manufactured over 18,000 aircraft. These included the P-51 Mustang fighter. The city also experienced significant historical tragedies. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dealey Plaza.

In 2016, a shooting occurred during a protest in Downtown Dallas. This event resulted in the deaths of five police officers.

The architecture of Dallas is very diverse. The skyline contains twenty buildings classified as skyscrapers.

These buildings are over 500 feet in height. Many structures belong to the modernist and postmodernist eras. The Reunion Tower is an example of modernist design. The Bank of America Plaza is a postmodernist skyscraper. It is known for being lit up in neon. Some older buildings use the Gothic Revival style. The Kirby Building is one such example. The Davis and Wilson Buildings use the neoclassical style. Swiss Avenue features historic houses in many different styles. These range from Victorian to neoclassical architecture.

Dallas is divided into several distinct neighborhoods. Central Dallas is anchored by the Downtown area. This includes Oak Lawn and Uptown. These areas have many restaurants and nightlife. Downtown has several named districts. The West End Historic District is one example. The Arts District is another important area. East Dallas includes the Deep Ellum arts area. It also contains the Lakewood neighborhood. Visitors can also find nature in the city. White Rock Lake is a notable location.
