To the north and west, it touches Kalmykia, Chechnya, and Stavropol Krai. The name Dagestan comes from Turkish and Persian roots. The Turkish word means "mountain." The Persian suffix "-stan" means "land." Therefore, the name translates to "land of the mountains."

The geography of the region is defined by extreme terrain. Most of the republic is mountainous. The Greater Caucasus Mountains cover the southern portion of the territory. The highest point in Dagestan is the Bazardüzü peak. It reaches an elevation of 3,767 meters. This peak sits on the border with Azerbaijan. The southernmost point of Russia is located only seven kilometers southwest of this peak. Other significant mountains include Diklosmta, Gora Addala Shukgelmezr, and Gora Dyultydag.

Water plays a vital role in this landscape. There are more than 1,800 rivers throughout the republic. Major rivers include the Sulak, the Samur, and the Terek. The Sulak River flows through the Sulak Canyon.

The republic also possesses a long coastline along the Caspian Sea. This is the world's largest inland sea. The climate is classified as continental. This means there is a significant lack of precipitation. It is one of the warmest areas in Russia. However, the mountainous regions experience a subarctic climate.

The history of the region involves many different empires. In the first few centuries AD, the area was part of Caucasian Albania. This region later became a province, or satrapy, of the Sasanian Empire. In the 6th century, the Sassanids built a strong citadel at Derbent. This site was known as the Caspian Gates.

During the 8th century, Arabs clashed with the Khazars. Following the Arab conquest in 643, the region of Derbent became the first part of current Russian territory to become Muslim. By the 15th century, Christianity had largely died away in the area.

Various groups have controlled Dagestan over the centuries. The Seljuk Turks held part of the region in the 11th century. The Mongols raided the land in 1221 and conquered Derbent between 1236 and 1239. Later, the Timurids incorporated the region into their realm. In the 16th century, the Persians regained rule. This Persian influence lasted intermittently until the early 19th century. The Russian Empire eventually consolidated control. Following the Russo-Persian War of 1804–1813, the Treaty of Gulistan forced Persia to cede southern Dagestan to Russia. The 1828 Treaty of Turkmenchay further secured Russian control.

Russian rule was not always peaceful. Highlanders rose in rebellion due to heavy taxation and the construction of fortresses. This led to the Caucasian War, which lasted until 1864. Leaders like Imam Shamil led these movements.

In the modern era, the political structure changed significantly. In 1917, the Mountainous Republic of the Northern Caucasus was declared. After the Bolshevik Revolution, the Dagestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was proclaimed on January 20, 1921. Today, the republic is rich in natural resources. It contains significant amounts of oil, natural gas, coal, and various minerals. It is also internationally famous for its culture of combat sambo. Many fighters from this region move on to mixed martial arts.

Administrative organization in Dagestan is quite detailed. The republic is divided into 41 administrative districts, known as raions. There are also ten cities and towns. These districts are further divided into 19 urban-type settlements. Additionally, there are 363 rural okrugs and stanitsa okrugs.
