Cyclobutane is a clear gas.

It is made of four carbon atoms. These atoms form a ring shape. The ring is not flat. It folds like a butterfly.

This shape is called a puckered conformation. This fold helps the ring stay stable. Without it, the ring would be too strained.

Some tiny life forms use this shape. Bacteria use it to build a wall. This wall is very dense.

It helps protect the bacteria. The wall keeps them safe from toxic things.

Sunlight can also change these shapes. UV light can join two parts of a cell together. This makes something called a photodimer.

Thymine photodimer

Most living things can fix this damage. They use enzymes, which are tiny tools in the cell. Some people have a disease called Xeroderma pigmentosum. Their bodies cannot fix this damage. This can cause skin problems. Scientists also use these shapes to make medicine. One drug used to fight cancer comes from a cyclobutane part.
