A blood clot, known as a deep vein thrombosis, can also block venous flow. Sometimes, the blood flow is simply reduced due to low cardiac output. Because the mucous membranes stay pink in peripheral cyanosis, doctors can use them to tell the two types apart.

One unique and complex version is called differential cyanosis. This occurs in patients with a patent ductus arteriosus. This is a condition where a specific blood vessel remains open. In these patients, pressure can build up in the pulmonary arteries. If the pulmonary pressure becomes higher than the aortic pressure, a shunt reversal occurs. This means blood flows from the right side of the heart to the left.
