Cuautitlán Izcalli is a city in the State of Mexico. It sits within the Valley of Mexico area. This location is part of the larger Mexico City metropolitan area. The city shares borders with many neighbors. To the north and northwest lies Tepotzotlán. To the east and northeast is Cuautitlán. The city also touches Tlalnepantla de Baz to the south. Other neighbors include Tultitlán, Atizapán de Zaragoza, and Nicolás Romero. This strategic spot has made the area important for a long time.

The history of this land goes back over two thousand years. Many different groups lived here long ago. These included nomadic hunters and settled peoples like the Olmecs and Toltecs. Later, the Chichimecas also occupied the territory. After the fall of Mexico-Tenochtitlan in 1521, Spain began to rule the region. Hernán Cortés gave the town of Cuautitlán to Alonso de Ávila. Later, Gil González Dávila also held power there. The area was even a place where Franciscan friars taught their faith. During the war for independence, leaders even offered pardons to those who joined the rebels.

In the 1900s, the city began to change in big ways. Factories like La Vizcaya started to grow in the area. These factories sent products away by rail. To help workers, 225 houses were built near the facilities. These homes had water, drainage, and even a school. In 1961, the La Vizcaya factory closed down. This happened because of new competition from petroleum products. Later, in 1971, President Luis Echeverría Álvarez laid the first stone for the new city. This was done near what is now the Parque de las Esculturas.

The modern city was a very special project. Leaders wanted to build a self-sufficient city for the Valley of Mexico. They used plans from cities in Europe and America to design it. The goal was to manage how many people lived in the area. They wanted to reduce crowding in the big metropolitan zone. The plans included areas for housing, work, and green spaces. They also wanted spots for sports. On May 1, 1972, the first 225 houses were officially delivered. By August of that year, more keys were given to school teachers.

Today, Cuautitlán Izcalli is a busy place with many parts. It has many different neighborhoods and large industrial zones.

Cuautitlán Izcalli is a significant municipality within the State of Mexico. It is situated in the Valley of Mexico region. This area forms a vital part of the larger Mexico City Metropolitan Area. The municipality shares borders with several neighboring locations. To the north and northwest, it meets Tepotzotlán. To the northeast and east, it borders Cuautitlán. The southern border is shared with Tlalnepantla de Baz. Tultitlán lies to the southeast, while Atizapán de Zaragoza is to the southeast. Finally, Nicolás Romero borders the municipality to the west.

The identity of the municipality is expressed through specific symbols. Its shield features a red triangle with rounded corners. This shape is fragmented in the center of each side. The design represents the conjunction of Cuautitlán, Tepotzotlán, and Tultitlán. Inside the triangle, a white circle features ramifications toward the sides. These ramifications form the letters "C" and "I". The "C" is green, and the "I" is black. The municipal glyph depicts a tree with a tooth open in the center. This glyph means "abundance between the heads." It also references the goddess Tlazolteotl and the concept of "calli," which means house.

Archaeological evidence shows this land has been important for over two thousand years. Various indigenous groups occupied the territory throughout history. These included nomadic hunters and settled peoples. The Teotihuacanos, Toltecs, Chichimecas, and Olmecs all lived in this region. Following the fall of Mexico-Tenochtitlan in 1521, Spain began to exercise power here. Hernán Cortés entrusted the town of Cuautitlán to Alonso de Ávila. Later, Gil González Dávila held authority over the area. The region also became a site for Franciscan friars to teach doctrine. During the independence war, the Spanish offered pardons to rebels within the jurisdiction.

Administrative changes shaped the municipality over many decades. In 1837, the Department of Mexico was divided into 13 districts. Cuautitlán served as the fourth district. By 1855, new boundaries were set. The fifth district, Tlalnepantla, included Cuautitlán, Tlalpan, and Zumpango. Many original towns formed the basis of the modern municipality. These included Axotlán, San Juan Atlamica, and San Lorenzo Riotenco. Other early settlements were La Aurora and Santa Bárbara Tlacatecpan. These historic towns contributed to the complex geography seen today.

Industrialization brought significant changes to the local landscape. In the early years, factories like La Vizcaya flourished. This factory was the first to ship products by rail in this direction. To house workers, 225 adobe or tepetate houses were built near the facilities. These rancherías provided essential services like drinking water and drainage. They also included a school and a tienda de raya called "La Vizcaya." However, competition from petroleum-derived products changed the economy. This competition caused the La Vizcaya factory to close on April 1, 1961.

The modern city of Cuautitlán Izcalli was a planned urban project. In 1971, President Luis Echeverría Álvarez laid the first stone. This occurred near the current Parque de las Esculturas. The goal was to create a self-sufficient city for the Valley of Mexico. Planners used models from European and American cities. They aimed to regulate population growth and reduce metropolitan congestion. The design included specific zones for industry, housing, and green spaces. On May 1, 1972, the first 225 houses were delivered. By August 1972, keys were handed to school teachers.

Cuautitlán Izcalli maintains a rich cultural and religious history. The municipality hosts many Catholic patron saint festivities. On June 9, 2014, Pope Francis created the Diocese of Izcalli. Several ancient temples remain in the area. San Lorenzo Río Tenco and Santa Bárbara Tlacatecpan date to the 16th and 17th centuries. San Juan Atlamica and San Mateo Ixtacalco were built in the 18th century. The city also manages its own public services. These include the municipal police, firefighters, and the water manager, Operagua.
