Some research suggests the genera Loxia and Carduelis might be merged. However, many scientists believe keeping them separate is better. This is because the crossbill beak represents a unique evolutionary path. Interestingly, DNA research has not always shown clear differences between species. Some scientists believe limited interbreeding helps them maintain morphological plasticity. This plasticity helps them switch to different trees if their preferred food fails.

Crossbills are a fascinating example of how biology and environment interact. Their breeding habits are tied directly to tree cycles. They often breed very early, sometimes during winter months. This allows them to take advantage of maximum cone supplies. When cone crops fail, the birds undergo irruption. This means they move out of their normal breeding range to find food.
