Criticism of Christianity involves many different types of arguments against the faith.

These critiques examine Christian beliefs, teachings, and historical actions. Critics have raised concerns regarding violence, corruption, and superstition. Some arguments focus on social issues like bigotry or the treatment of women. Others question the religion's theology, such as its views on polytheism or sectarianism. This history of questioning began during the early formation of the religion in the Roman Empire.

In the early years, specific philosophers emerged to challenge the new faith. Porphyry was a major Neoplatonic philosopher who wrote a book titled *Against the Christians*. He argued that Christian prophecies had not actually materialized as promised. Other early writers, such as Celsus and Julian, also offered critiques. After the Roman Empire officially adopted Christianity, the government and church authorities often suppressed dissenting voices. This created a long period where different religious perspectives were not easily shared.

Many theological disagreements have come from other Abrahamic religions.

Jewish and Islamic scholars have provided significant critiques based on shared scriptural traditions. In the 12th century, the famous rabbi and scholar Maimonides argued against certain Christian doctrines. He believed some practices deviated from strict monotheism, which is the belief in one God. Islamic scholars have also critiqued the concept of the Trinity. They viewed the idea of Jesus's divinity as incompatible with their understanding of monotheism.

The Age of Enlightenment in the 18th century brought new types of philosophical challenges.

Deist philosophers like Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau critiqued Christianity as a revealed religion. Other major thinkers, including David Hume and Thomas Paine, questioned the historical accuracy of the Bible. They also focused on the perceived corruption of religious authorities. Immanuel Kant offered a different perspective. He critiqued traditional arguments for God's existence but sought to unite faith with practical reason.

Modern political movements have also shaped how Christianity is critiqued.

The French Revolution in the late 18th century led to a wave of secularism. During this time, hundreds of churches were closed and thousands of priests were deported or killed. Later, thinkers like John Stuart Mill and Karl Marx argued that Christian doctrine was conservative or anti-democratic. Friedrich Nietzsche suggested that Christianity could foster a "slave morality" that suppresses human will. Revolutionary movements in Russia and China also led to criticisms of Christian ideas.

Scholars today use a method called biblical criticism to study the Bible's meaning.

This method relies on historical principles and reason rather than faith. There are four primary types of this study. Form criticism analyzes literary documents to find earlier oral traditions like myths or legends. Tradition criticism looks at how religious traditions changed over time. Higher criticism studies the sources and literary methods used by biblical authors. Finally, lower criticism focuses on the actual wording and textual purity of the text.

Textual criticism is a specific part of this scholarly work.

Experts examine many different ancient manuscripts to understand the original wording. Most differences found are small, such as misspellings or word order variations. However, some scholars like Bart D. Ehrman suggest some changes were motivated by theology. For example, modern Bibles sometimes mark certain verses as non-original. These include the ending of Mark and the story of the woman taken in adultery in John. Despite these variations, research shows high levels of agreement.

Studies of the Greek New Testament show 62.9% complete agreement among major editions. The Dead Sea Scrolls also suggest the Old Testament was transmitted with high accuracy.

Critics also point to internal inconsistencies within the Bible. They note different names for the same people or different sequences of events. Some scholars use the documentary hypothesis to explain these differences. In response, Christians use a practice called apologetics to defend their faith. Traditionalists argue the texts are consistent and were written by specific authors. Some believe the Bible is infallible, meaning it is free from error in its truths. They suggest that God used the unique personalities of writers to convey his message.
